Subwoofer matching
I have 99db efficient horn speakers and use 2 RELs (bought used in mint shape for around 200 bucks each...a 10" and an 8") with 'em, and have never sensed a lack of "speed." They have input level controls along with phase and frequency adjustment....
What creates the effortlessness in sound reproduction?
I think it could be efficiency, at least in the case of a pair of 99db efficient speakers I use (Klipsch Heresy IIIs). The sound gets thrown out from the speaker post haste.
Why is loudness compensation missing from "mid-fi"?
Get a Schiit Loki...inexpensive, clean, clear, unobtrusive in all ways, doesn't make itself known when bypassed, and by raising the levels on the treble and bass sides you immediately accomplish what a loudness control does. Put it in a tape loop ...
Need under $1500 preamp for my system
I've owned a Freya "original series" preamp for a couple of years and it's excellent...possibly not expensive enough for some, but so well designed there's really nothing not to like (don't like tubes? turn 'em off...), and nobody makes anything l...
Help - I've Got the Dreaded Transformer Growl....
I've used a PS Audio "Humbuster III" for my power amps for years, and it works swimmingly. Why they discontinued that thing seems weird but they're still out there, or at least maybe a similar item as discussed above...I've got other DC blocking p...
Considering going back to Solid State
After recently auditioning the well regarded Schiit Audio Aegir amp (driven by curiosity clearly influenced by the extremely positive Stereophile review) in my home rig (meaning I bought the amp and returned it), I’ve moved even more toward the Tu...
Wide baffle speakers are better than narrow
If you mount drivers on a canned ham you can sort of replicate a human head...for this to last you do need to keep the listening room very cold or have a shorter listening session followed by sandwiches.
There's a lot more bass in a 6.5" driver than most of you think
I owned a pair of the well regarded Silverline Audio Preludes for years and they had an extremely coherent full range sound from D'Appolito arrayed 3.75" titanium/magnesium woofers. It seems that the overall design relative to how the cabinet inte...
Active or passive?
The obsession some audio geeks have with the "evil vibration" that seemingly plagues everything from components to your cables is absolutely tossed out the window with active speakers...somehow my REL subs manage to work beautifully in spite of th...
Love it when it snows
Los Angeles has been expanding into arid land for decades, leading to a water crises that's really hitting its stride and 3 hour commuting being the norm. I also lived in L.A. as a kid and the smog was insane, but the improvement in L.A. air quali...
Love it when it snows
Rachel Carson was 100% correct and we owe her a debt of gratitude for Silent Spring...from the New Yorker: “Silent Spring,” a landlubber, is no slouch of a book: it launched the environmental movement; provoked the passage of the Clean Air Act (19...
Phono preamp suggestions under $1000
I bought a Cambridge 640p a while back and added a very groovy Pangea P100 power supply to use instead of the supplied "wall wart" and it sounds great (just switched to a MC cart and it's still great). Neither is available these days unfortunately...
Should I trust movers with my equipment?
Movers yes, shakers no.
Love it when it snows
When my hifi gear is outside and gets snowed on it absolutely runs far more quietly as it completely shorts out and stops working. So don’t do that. Therefore I’m in a rare state of agreement with Millercarbon (footprint). Note that on the "upper ...
Active or passive?
I like tube amps so no "active" for me. I also have swapped amps with the same speakers over the years, which active obviates...plus, the AC cables to the speakers is off-putting...otherwise, active all the way!
