Ortofon Quintet Black or Dynavector 20x2L
The Quintet Bronze should have the warmer signature and the black more detail, if they’re similar to the the Cadenza line. Also, the Black has a Shibata stylus. I’ve read that shape is closest to the cutting head’s but also has a comparatively rap...
Ever Bought an Audio Product that was Stupid Good for the Money?
I bought a used 5 shelf Symposium Isis Ultra Rack with TT shelf last December for $3,300. A real game changer that justified the cost vs performance of the entire system. http://www.vpiforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8479Two tweaks - A sapphire ...
ARC Ref 5se inferior to LS28?
I love the ARC new model and upgrade strategy.  I've picked up serious gear at half price from people who had to have the latest and greatest and could afford it.  In my eyes, ARC is the Robin Hood of used audio!
Favorite Albums Of 19_ _
Mine are pretty much here: http://www.vpiforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=8981 BTW I'm "billo" on that board
Separate conductors for separate frequency ranges in cables
I'm not knocking power cables - I hear they really work, as do many things audio that make little logical sense for the magnitude of change they produce.  But I have to wonder how a power cord could sound better than removing the outlet completely...
Hey guys, time to can your table. All you need is love!

Aragon 8008ST vs Sumo Andromida III
You've nailed the Andromeda sound.  I owned an Andromeda 2 for a few years and it had the most addictive highs I have ever experienced from an amp.
Recording quality...
I mostly agree with ivan_nosnibor - great post.  Some albums, new and old, that I thought were poorly recorded turned out to be gems once I  majorly tweaked my TT.  As to recording quality, I do find the original all analog albums generally sound ...
Agoners: Need Advice! Have 3K to spend on an Amp, what do I do with no way to audition?
"wlutke,So you're saying to buy what I want, and keep looking trading until I find the perfect one?"I was suggesting you ask advice from B&W 802 owners who have had success matching amps to the speakers.
Agoners: Need Advice! Have 3K to spend on an Amp, what do I do with no way to audition?
cohicks4,I searched the forums for amps recommended as a good match for my speakers and that worked out well.  I bought used - I assume for $3K you are too with those brands - so no problem if I didn't like the amp.  I would resell and try again, ...
How much gain is needed in a Phono Preamp for a 0.2 to 0.3mv low output moving coil?
I use a Dynavector XX2 MKII (.28 mv) with the ARC PH-7 (57.5 dB). My line pre is the ARC REF 3 (11.6 dB balanced) and the amp is an Ayre V5xe (26 dB). Noise and gain are not an issue. When the volume control gets past 50 (out of 104) my Vanderstee...
Voltage source vs. current source amplifiers
I was a technician, not an engineer, but I do know that a tube is a voltage amplifier and a transistor is a current amplifier. The Martin Logans have powered woofers so tubes can handle the relatively easy load of the mid/treble panel. The Magnepa...
turntable " thump " sound when not running
Try disconnecting your turntable from the phono pre and short the individual phono inputs (not to each other). If it still thumps, it’s likely the phono pre has a bad tube or is going bad.
Original Vandersteen Model 3
I owned the Vandersteen 3A's for years and they were sweet, warm and musical but with sluggish bass, no matter the amp, of which I tried quite a few.  I upgraded them to 3A Sig status (which only the original owner can do) and they're way better. ...
How often is your system "good"?
Mine sounds best when I listen to the music and forget the equipment.  Sometimes it takes a beer.
