Hand me down audio equip- upgrade advice
Try and hear a recent iteration of the Vandersteen 2--a used model should fall in your price range.
Why not more dealers take trade ins?
They have to test it, store it, provide a minimal warranty, have someone market it, have it sitting around for months, etc. etc. all the while competing with all the internet venues.Sounds like a great business plan to me.
Loudness - Why has the industry stopped producing amplifiers with this feature any longer?
The reason it mostly went away was a big trend towards hair-shirt purism in preamps and integrated.  Tone controls, balance control, and loudness (button or variable) all were eliminated at the altar of the fewest possible stages and connections. ...

Opinionson Electrocompaniet EC-1 MK IV CD player
At the level where you're looking, the Marantz SA-KI Ruby would fit the bill and provide the kind of sonic presentation you're seeking.
Spendor D7 vs. Harbeth Super HL5+
Well said @prof BTW, if you ever decide to go with standmounts for your second system, I'm pretty sure you would really enjoy one of Fritz's offerings.
Best improvement for the buck
Full loom of Raven cable, or even better Audio Envy.
I can prove your room is bad
