MFA MAGUS A2 upgrade/repair
I have a couple of tube preamps but the MFA Magus B is my daily driver. I had occasion to call Scott Frankland (the "F" in MFA) while I lived in the Bay Area. He was very informative and walked me through my issue. I was surprised to learn that he...
Has "politically correct" killed the used audio market?
"Pre-owned" has replaced "Used" but it still means the same thing.
No protection for buyers on Audiogon
I browse these Audiogon pages daily. Sometimes, I see a piece of equipment at a ridiculously low price. Invariably, when I look at the feedback, there is none. I think to myself, "I’d have to be crazy to jump on that one." However, some do. Look, ...
Opening Record Store
We lived in the SF Bay Area for more than thirty years, and only recently moved. I have never owned a record store but I have been in enough to know that, unless you just loved the movie "High Fidelity" and envy the lifestyle of its employees, a r...
Has anyone successfully put their speakers in storage for an extended period of time?
You should be able to do it. Just be sure the storage facility is "Climate Controlled", not the kind where the roll-up door is outside. I would check them annually for any disintegration of the surrounds.
Esoteric DV-50
Check eBay.
Need someone to repair and service my Marantz 2285B in the San Francisco Bay Area
I don't live there anymore but I recall using "The Soundwell" (on University Ave) in Berkeley. They were always reliable, and reasonable.
Your favorite 'concept' album
Jethro Tull’s "Too Old to Rock ’n’ Roll: Too Young to Die"
Oppo 105 vs. 205 in playing SACDs
"The grass is always greener..."
Anyone have Nakamichi CR-7A parts?
Contact Willy Hermann. He had a graveyard of Nak parts last time I was there. You should find his contact info on the net. The CR-7A was a Nak worth repairing. Pay no attention to detractors!
The cost of LP's and CD's - an observation
I shop at a local "antique store" for CDs. They were $2.99 when I first started shopping there (about 3 years ago). Then, they were lowered to $1.99, later 99 cents, now 50 cents. That’s not deflation, just supply and demand. Every thrift store in...
My "audiophile" weakness(es)...ie: how the item looks, and you?.
There are lots of great sounding pieces of equipment available at varying price points. All things being equal (are they ever really equal), I’m buying the one that appeals to me visually. Why would I want the ugly one? I’ll have to look at it eve...
Help with a Superphon Preamp problem?
I'm no engineer, but I recently had a similar problem. I bought a turntable and hooked it up to my MFA preamp, which has had very little time spinning vinyl. It sounded great at first but started to vary the volume without any help from me. I susp...
My Oppo is a bit too bright
I have several CD players but I use my Oppo 105D more than the others mainly for the features available via the remote, like volume. Also, it has a solid, competent sound. I bought a Benchmark DAC1 many years ago, but never got around to using it ...
