$1130 system for a musician, please :
I am answering as though your total budget is $1130, although you only ask for advice on amp and speakers. I'm including a CDP recommendation but you may already have one.I would start with the best CD player I could afford, perhaps a Music Hall M...
Vinyl or wait for the new stuff??
Jphilips, bravo for doing your comparison and telling us the results. As you know, you are not the only one to have done such a thing--UHF magazine comes to mind, and also a German researcher who additionally used tubes vs transistors as a paramet...
Have you ever deceived your wife-audio purchase
Vvrinc, got it about Greek islands. Thanks for the heads up. I'll do the kitchen reno, maybe build in a couple of speakers...Generankin, you have supplied more evidence to prove that the female ear is subtler. As if we didn't know. Still got the B...
Best Sub $500 used CD Player
The MMF CD25 ( Shanling CD-S100 ) is a really great player for the money, as you know, and you ought to be able to get it for a lot less than $500 used. I don't know of an older player selling for $500 which would beat it, as far as my ears were c...
Review: Shanling SP-80 Tube amp
I've had these amps for a year now and have experimented with NOS tubes in the dirver section. These are dual triode types, one 6SL7 and one 6SN7, used as phase inverter ( for the push-pull configured EL34 output tubes ) and buffer, respectively.Y...
Help Audiophile jcfrech stuck in Tokyo-for ...
At the risk of being boring, I second Jeff's great advice--there are at least three Hit Audio amps I think are super deals. I like the Shanling with Sennheiser idea too, but would want good tubes for the 'phone section.
Eggleston Works Andra II versus B&W 800
Mgottlieb, may I ask how you positioned your Andra IIs in your living room--short wall, long wall, across a corner or... ?
Eggleston Works Andra II versus B&W 800
OK, I made a contentious comment on the speaker's looks. I did not wish to insult anybody's taste, or anybody's wife's taste, and I apologize. My own personal taste is very catholic (I don't mean in the religious sense), in that what matters to me ...
Eggleston Works Andra II versus B&W 800
Don't know the B&W 800 although I know other B&Ws. Heard the Andra II at the Montreal show and liked it a lot. Very subtle, musical speaker but lots of oomph available. Didn't want to leave that room. IMHO it put all the B&Ws I had hea...
Review: Shanling CD-T100 CD Player
I raved about this player for looks and value, two years ago. Sorry, I haven't heard a modded version and I hesitate to go for the kind of mods you mention. It's a question of the value added--I really don't know how much can be gotten back at res...
Review: Shanling SCD-T200 w/ EA Turbomod CD Player
Tunes, Jeff? Absolutely! If chez vous, this time, I get to hear your T100... (attempting to stay on topic).
Review: Shanling SCD-T200 w/ EA Turbomod CD Player
Many thanks for a fine review. It's hard to write about listening experiences in such detail and length--you spent a lot of time getting it right. Just like you spent a lot of time getting your T200 right.Your report of this experience is the most...
Have you ever deceived your wife-audio purchase
Boy, would I love to be able to say I was straight up with the s.o. about it all. The music has lifted me out of depression countless times. But I wonder if I would have been less depressed if my companion and I had both found the same pleasure in...
Tell me about your sweet spot.
Serious answer here. My Shearwater Hot Rods are toed in _just a little_ . Toe in too much (aimed at the ears when seated at midpoint) and the s.s. is so tiny that you need your head in a vice. With the speaks aimed past the head but not parallel, ...
