music to wake up vandy 5a subs
I'm afraid this is not a truly practical recommendation, because it's hard to find, but for the desirable combination of speed and bass energy I like to use "Le temps passé" from Michel Jonasz' "La Fabuleuse Histoire de Mister Swing" (WEA). This t...
Pre-Amp Reliability -- 4th time mine has conked
I've owned a Klyne SK-5A for five years. I bought it from the original owner who had never had to have it repaired in 19 years. I haven't either. OK, the "standby" LED is a little dim, and I've had to tighten the fixing bolts on two RCA connectors...
Meadowlark speakers
I have Shearwater Hot Rods and love 'em, but I haven't owned a Kestrel or Kestrel 2. Obviously Meadowlark being out of business means you can't get factory service any more. That may have a small impact on used prices. However AFAIK all Meadowlark...
Please educate me on tubes
This would take a few pages to answer properly. You seem to be starting at the very beginning!Q1: There are modern production tubes from different sources in Asia or Eastern Europe. There are also New Old Stock tubes, the best of these come from W...
Passive biamplification questions
I can only speak from a single set of listening sessions, using Linn gear. I was able to compare three setups: passive biamping using basic-level amps (LK85s), single-amping with a better amp ( LK140), and active biamping using basic amps.In a nut...
Cartridge for SME IV.V
My own personal analog guru has very good things to say about the SME V / Benz LP Ebony combination.
need help spending money
Why not more Totems? Rainmakers for the rear, or perhaps Mites. You could go with their Lightning for a sub but also several others, since matching the fronts' voicing is not as important for a sub as it is for the rears.
Power cable hierarchy for components
My experience with PCs has been transport first, then preamp. I think my two DACs (Cambridge IsoMagic, Apogee DA-100E) were unusual, because most often I have heard that the DAC is the first priority. For mine, though, very little difference.
Easy to Drive Bookshelf Monitor?
Thanks for the correction on the Leisure 2's sensitivity, Stew.Forgive me if I sound like I'm labouring the point, but if you got a chance to listen to the Titus Es with your tube amps, you might be surprised. I think it goes extremely well with t...
Where to position speakers in new apartment
This is a very useful thread for me, I'm going through setup decisions now and have a similar room. Never doubt that deliberations like these go further than just their participants! Thanks all.
Easy to Drive Bookshelf Monitor?
I like the Triangle Titus Es. Front ported. It is biwirable, 90 dB efficient and well within your budget. HiFi Choice Best Buy and Stereophile Recommended. The new Es model is bigger and IMHO better than the old Titus or Titus 202. Some say it sou...
Linn LP 12 Problem.......
Linn themselves say get a Cirkus before a Lingo, but that doesn't get you music if what's not working is the power supply. My 2 cents: if you can find a used Lingo or spring for a new one, that's the way to go right now. With fewer dollars, get th...
Linn LP 12 Problem.......
My fave review of the LP12 from Basik through Valhalla to Lingo was Corey Greenberg's. I couldn't find it online but I have it somewhere in hard copy. This is what I got from Stereophile's review archives (John Atkinson):In its various incarnation...
Biwire Speaker Question
You have to compare apples to apples here.Whether your biwire cabling is two separate sheaths or one sheath with two cables inside, the wire gauge at the amp end is going to be the sum of the wire gauges at the speaker end.The OP asked if the conn...
What New Cartridge should I get for my VPI?
The Denon 103 is AFAIK a low-output moving coil (MC) cartridge, while the Dynavector 10x5 is a high-output MC. There is a big difference in the strength (amplitude) of their signals. The Denon's signal is very small and the phono stage you use with...
