Dimond Cantilevers And Tip Mass
My Koetsu DC was said to be one-piece, but a photomicrograph seems to show otherwise. In any case, there is no glob of epoxy to be seen - in fact, no evidence of epoxy at all. So, very low mass at the stylus.
Anyone adjust cart set up due to ambient temperature changes?
Thank you Mac. I had a vague idea that cartridge and speakers might be happier in a room with a fairly constant temperature, but I  didn't realize how important that was. I will take more care starting now.
Do your ears deceive you?
The cables question is ill-formed. I would agree that there is a difference between the worst and the best. There are many physical properties to consider: Resistance; Capacitance; Inductance; Dielectric Absorption; RF rejection; connection integ...
Sviatoslav Richter. Greatest pianist of the last century?
Give me Gieseking.
The criteria for loudspeaker choices.
Note that the Magnepan DWM woofer is also a push-pull design and it is flat right into the treble. It is an absolute wonder with my Quads - especially with a decent mounting platform - the one supplied is more stylish than functional.
Comparison of various subwoofers for 2 channel audio
I too am running an ESL system: 2 Quad 2905's and 2 Quad 2805's perpendicular to the 29's (all modified). I am running an isobaric sub with a 50 Hz cutoff, but frankly it doesn't do very much. Almost all of the bass augmentation comes from Magnepa...
Do You Have to Play a Component to Warm it Up?
Electronics absolutely. My class A amps need a day at full power, preferably 4. Ditto my phono/pre. Brystons a few hours of idle. Cartridge and speakers 20 minutes of use..
Holbo airbearing turntable
Suggest you practice installing a dirt cheap cartridge a few times. Then graduate to something worthy of the table.
Holbo airbearing turntable
Ask the man who owns one. Sounds like everything I like in a turntable - and once you've heard good air, there's no going back. IMO. YMMV.
Holbo airbearing turntable
Thanks for the nod, @pindac . But I don’t own a Holbo, I’ve just experimented with some ideas while I built my own air bearing unit. There are several sources of noise, the most important being the bearing and the motor. Also, resonances can aris...
Active Speakers Don't Sound Better
Well, for one thing the bass amp isn't driving the treble or vice versa, so you can optimize with actives in a way that you can't with passives. Second, you have more options with actives, e.g. Bessell filters. Just try that with passives. Third, ...
Magnepan 3.7i amp pairing
I use Bryston SST in the home theatre to drive an all-Magnepan (except centre) system. Sounds VERY good. So does the 4B SST which drives the isobaric sub. I also use B3 in the listening room to drive DWM’s - it may be overkill, but the sound is j...
Great Interview-
Many musicians listen first for the performance, to see how other people did it. Maybe so they can too, maybe to know what to avoid. Then too, they listen to live music all the time.
The Horror
I understand your pain. I like planar speakers - but they are not for everyone, as I think soix was saying. Try auditioning something else. As for the long term, it seems to me that you have three obvious alternatives: headphones, room treatment,...
Your Ultimate Phono Preamp: Which One Would You Choose?
Just got to brag. My DIY battery powered SS with only air caps (variable) and vacuum caps in the signal path. Discrete nude Vishay resistor selector for volume control. Variable cartridge loading. Adjusts for some deviation from RIAA. Every bell ...
