Refurbished / Re-tipped Cartridges - Are they worth Buying?
Another reason to prefer the factory is the parts selection process. A factory can afford to order many parts and use the best only for its most expensive cartridges, and sell or throw away the dregs. A retipper, perhaps not.
Record cleaning and realistic expectations
@lewm When I lived in LA I used tap water on about a dozen records, and they remained unplayable until I cleaned them with a US machine. Now they are pristine.
Spades vs. Banana plugs ??
Not my experience at all. My high end connectors on Scanspeak drivers and Bryston amplifiers all come loose with spades or bare wire, on their own, without mortal assistance. Poltergeist? Of course, when loosing is a serious problem, lock washers...
Spades vs. Banana plugs ??
@mitch2   I see that I misunderstood your post. I thought you were choosing theory over practicality - and a loose spade connector may not be detected as it gradually looses conductivity, leading to poorer sound over time.
Spades vs. Banana plugs ??
@mitch2   a group of audiophiles (known for believing something as small as a power line fuse makes a large sonic difference) choose utility over conductivity Just how conductive is a loose silver connection? Or a corroded copper connection? Yo...
Electrostatics and tubes
@bdp24 Nice summary. I've owned planars since 1973 (Magnplanar Tympani 1a's). I've also owned SMG's, MGII, and MGIII. Also Martin Logan Prodigies, Quad ESL57, Quad 2805 and 2905. Current system is Quad 2805, 2905, Magneplanar DWM (x2), and DIY sub...
Best speaker brands for transient response
The cheap 'pro audio' systems that I have heard are painfully awful. Here too, it seems like you get what you pay for. Sometimes. YMMV
Want to build a rack with sandwich layered dampening
By the way, lose the screws! Metal fasteners transmit energy very efficiently from one layer to the next, undoing most of the good which constrained layer damping can do. Other fasteners connecting the two layers aren't much better.
Want to build a rack with sandwich layered dampening
Constrained layer damping works by having two materials of different acoustic impedance in intimate contact.Wood and elastomeric glue are quite different, but you may fare better by using one layer of wood and another layer of metal, joined by ela...
Spades vs. Banana plugs ??
That's the rub - when they're screwed down tight. But what about next month? Still tight?
New speakers for a new start?
I had a similar issue: planar speakers without enough bass, and subs were just too slow - no bass was better than augmented bass. Or so I thought. Then Magnepan began selling small, individual bass panels, which they call DWM, and which they insi...
Building Resonance Free Subwoofers
And DIY forever!
Speakers on top of subwoofer
I side with @soix on this. A speaker balanced on top of a sub is going to move. It may even fall off. This is avoided in 3-way systems by bolting, gluing, or otherwise fastening the sections together in the optimal configuration, which of course d...
Building Resonance Free Subwoofers
Subs are also a dipole isobaric, premium 10" Scanspeak woofers, crossed at 50Hz, 18dB. Both DWM’s and Scanspeaks are unusual in having good transients and linearity extending more than 4 octaves above the crossover point, so that the transitions a...
Building Resonance Free Subwoofers
I use four modern Quads, modified. They are crossed over at 18dB, 200 Hz (factory), but they need stabilizing, which is easily done with a platform box of baltic birch with a non-resonant top. Each box is stabilized with a Bryston mono block on th...
