Is it possible for the center image to drift from lp to lp?
I hear it too, and I vote for 2, 3 and 4. Of course, this may have something to do with the fact that I am 70 (seriously, though, I hear just fine to 11KHz, lab measurement, repeatable). And I have taken care of the obvious things, as CLEEDS sugge...
Will an Isolation Transformer Help My Digital?
Another thought, Lowrider - the obvious place for a manufacturer to skimp is on the power supply. But high fidelity begins with pure power, because every bit of garbage, grunge, or harmonic which is generated by a power supply is going to end up a...
Will an Isolation Transformer Help My Digital?
Lak, I have a similar setup, and don't understand why it isn't among the first upgrades on the audiophile radar. My isolation transformers are Plitron.Lowrider, before you spend big bucks, you might want to consider a nice used power supply for th...
Will an Isolation Transformer Help My Digital?
Lowrider, I'll bet the wall-wart is a switching power supply. If so, it may be feeding noise back into your wall. Why not try an old laboratory power supply capable of the same voltage, instead of the wall-wart? "Old" being the operative word, bef...
Phono cartridge Goldilocks
Hello Jarrett.I use Sowter transformers as per their recommended schematic, with lower values of both resistance and capacitance in series across the output. Parallel to that is a range of possible load resistances from far above to far below what...
Phono cartridge Goldilocks
Have you tried tuning your step-up transformer? I use a bank of nude Vishay loading resistors (on the input), and switch in the loading that sounds best for the given record. Then I use an air gap capacitor to tune the output from the SUT. My RSP ...
Need Help: What In My Home Electric System Killed the Sound?
Billy, have you considered running your system on a big Variac? Then you could select your optimal voltage.
Need Help: What In My Home Electric System Killed the Sound?
Sounds like a cue for my song: isolation transformers. I use isolation transformers in front of all my audio gear. Plitron makes a good one, and they sell to the general public. Cost effective and harm preventive too.
Newbie With Magnepan 1.7is
I too drove Magnepans with Bryston, which sounded very good.
Newbie With Magnepan 1.7is
Mazerunner, you have made a superb choice in Magnepan. You have obviously used your ears to guide you to the best choice for the money. I suggest that you continue in this wise.Especially with cables. Try before you buy. Every time. What I have al...
Rare and non-heavy advertised Ribbon \ Foil cables?
Philip, you are asking the right question for speaker wire. According to Maxwell's Equations, two ribbons with wide sides together, are the theoretical optimum for speaker wire. It's the current that makes inductance your main enemy for speaker wi...
For Old Timers who experienced the "Golden Age" of Audio of the 60s and 70s.
BDP - yep.I had one of the first Tympani 1a's, in 1973. What a speaker! Biamped with ARC crossover, modified ST-70's, and solid state monos. The Quad ESL's were just not big enough for me then, or now - so I have several copies of the new crop of ...
Direction of aftermarket fuses (only for believers!)
Nice quote, Jea. I find the same thing when I quote mathematics. Everyone's ignorance trumps my expertise. Ah well.
I'm happy but I want more, more, more
Bill, I too have an all analogue system. Upgrading my monoblocks just cost a bunch, but that good result was no more impressive than a $10 tweak. That tweak was resonance control on the tonearm. I used some sticky gel, the stuff used to tune drum k...
1 pair of good interconnects- which 2 components should I use them on?
Hockey, be a little careful if you decide to solder cables. Most of the better cables have teflon (PTFE) dielectric, and teflon is bad stuff when it is heated. Completely stable to about 450F, then begins to decompose into some of the nastiest che...
