After a long, long sleep: ML-335
Good point, @surfmuz , dust and wildlife can be a problem. But if it's been sitting in its box, perhaps less of an issue. I would not risk an exploding electrolytic in a high value classic, but YMMV.
Why whole house surge protectors are not enough
Just to lower the tone for a moment, I did a trip around the house and found that two of my surge suppressors were no longer suppressing anything. One replaced, one on order. Goes to show - some attention required.

Just an amateur, but I've been doing this for 20 years. Actually, electrolytics usually go bad with heat, not use. They dry out. So, the power supply for my main amps is located in another room, a cool one, with all electrolytic caps well below al...

25+ years without power? Potential big trouble. If it were mine, and I was short of cash, I’d pull the big caps and power them up one by one, very carefully with a variac, as @gs5556 suggested. And I’d put them inside a metal box beforehand - big...
Costliest Brainfart
I was comparing several amps, had them sitting of the floor. One was a big monster with a bare aluminum chassis, and another a big Bryston. Was playing something a bit loud through the Bryston when I shifted it just a bit - plastering both termina...
Thank You Fumihiko Sugano and Koetsu
RIP Fumihiko-san. Thank you for the diamond rosewood. I've only had the one Koetsu, and it's always been stellar.
How is Quality and Customer Service defined in the 21st Century?
Bryston is tops for both quality and support, IME. A couple of years ago I called the factory to ask about a refurbished amp for my isobaric sub, and they put on the president!!!! He suggested a 20 year old design, recently refurbished. He warned ...
The most natural sound in the world.
Naw, it just sounds like my Mac.
Why whole house surge protectors are not enough
From an important textbook: "... it is not possible to turn off the current (to an inductor) suddenly, because that would imply an infinite voltage across the inductor’s terminals. What happens is that the voltage rises abruptly and keeps rising...
Why whole house surge protectors are not enough
And thanks for the thread, Eric. A real public service.
Why whole house surge protectors are not enough
I use isolation transformers for all my audio gear, and all the A/V. Maybe that's why my 2009 Kuro Plasma is still working - and working well enough to make the 4K upgrade unattractive.
Dynamic Range - the golden key to music nirvana?
I guess you don’t understand sarcastic humor. I guess you don't understand your topic. Just guessing, mind you - but must say that you write a good sentence. You wouldn't be a CHAT BOT, now, would you?

What @whart said.
What new gear have you just bought?
Last month finished an isobaric sub, Scanspeak drivers and Bryston powered. Sounds FAR better than anything I've heard - even keeps up with the planars.
What new gear have you just bought?
Just finished a NiCad control box for my phono/pre. Phono/pre is always on with standby power, and a built-in meter allows measurement of each cell or string of cells. Meter is noisy so can be disengaged. NiCad is engaged with or without diode pro...
