Has anyone made the jump to $uper High end and were disappointed?
@willemj Don't agree about electronics, although I applaud your skepticism and insistence on rational thought and experiment.First, I think that you will agree that more processing tends to sound worse. So the first thing I did after buying my Qua...
Why do turntables sound different?
Has, I remain wholly unconvinced.
Why do turntables sound different?
@has2be "Do you actually suggest that higher friction in a turntable bearing won’t create and amplify vibrations ..."Got it in one. Almost. I repeat, "The two may not be the same."  I also repeat, "Energy can be dissipated by heat (microscopic mot...
Why do turntables sound different?
@has2be "I would suggest that quiet bearings would HAVE to be low in friction, period. The greater the friction the higher the noise."Don't agree. I think that most would agree that the greater the friction the higher the energy to be dissipated. ...
Why do turntables sound different?
@lewm "Which is why it would be most surprising of all if all turntables with pretensions to excellence were to sound the same. Which is why I cannot get my arms around this topic."Most succinctly stated, Lew. Nevertheless, I think that the questi...
Why do turntables sound different?
@inna When I refer to 'mass of the platter', I am referring to suspended mass. That is, loosely speaking, the mass supported by the thrust bearing, including spindle and mat (usually negligible). A physicist would normally speak of the moment of i...
Why do turntables sound different?
I venture to suggest that quiet bearings are more important than low friction bearings. The two may not be the same. Although air bearings do seem to be best in both respects. Also important is the resonance of the platter, especially in designs wh...
A battle between two turntable generations. Which one is the winner?
Just want to agree about the Trans-Fi air bearing tonearm. Simply excellent. I own two of them.
Turntable upgrade advice
I like Nottingham. I bought a Mentor 20 years ago, and it has been upgraded to something quite exceptional. Bearing is still quiet as the grave. The 1997 arm was not up to the table, though. Mainly, adjustment was a pig. Talk to your dealer about V...
LP's... Do they sound better now than 30 yrs ago?
Engined, thank you. I had no idea that anyone had produced a one piece diamond cantilever/stylus before. If Koetsu has not evolved with stylus shape or platinum magnets, then a similar cartridge was available 30 years ago.
LP's... Do they sound better now than 30 yrs ago?
Engined, I don't think so. Line contact is now commonplace. One piece integrated diamond cantilever is available. The best amorphous core step-up transformers from Lundahl are of superior quality. I tried Koetsu transformers from 30 years ago, and...
LP's... Do they sound better now than 30 yrs ago?
Far better now.First, ultrasonic cleaning systems are readily available. If you haven't heard an ultrasonically cleaned record on a good system, you have no idea of the potential in terms of silent backgrounds and micro-detail. See the Rushton thr...
Garage sale system
I salute you. DIY forever!
Question for cable/wire naysayers.....
At the risk of burning my brownie points, which would you rather have?- one of the world's best MC step up transformers, or- boutique cables?Maybe it's just me, but I voted for the first.
Just retired and want to get back to vinyl listening
Yep, record cleaning is a whole new thing. Good bang for buck too.I use ultrasound. In my system, it made almost as big a difference as going from good moving magnet to great moving coil. For 20% of the money - actually, about the cost of a set of...
