Looking for vintage Quad ESL's - or my wife thinks a "shrink" becase she says I'm crazy! Byang, must disagree.I have found Quads to be perfectly reliable - but then, I have never pushed them hard.As for OTL's, as I understand, it is true that a good protection circuit is necessary, because if something goes badly wrong, it can send a ...
Looking for vintage Quad ESL's - or my wife thinks a "shrink" becase she says I'm crazy! Good ears you have.I have owned three types of Magnepans and three types of ESL's. I say Quads, hands down.ESL 57's are wonderfully musical speakers. 2805's add an octave high and low but sound a tad bright to me, while 2905's add those octaves an...
Gonna have to ditch the Soundsmith Carmen II Consider the torque on the mounting screws. Sounds like hokum, but IME it can have a significant effect. I use a German torque screwdriver.
Your Favorite High Quality Audio Bulk Cable Manufacturer? I use Japanese brands for interconnect: Canare and Mogami. Canare Starquad has a great shield but is hard to terminate, whereas Mogami’s shield is not braided, and so easier to terminate. ETI connectors are very good, being non-capacative.
Coming out of the blackhole called work...retirement AMG, that's why you want to do DIY !Who else is going to make an arm-board out of graphene film on a nickel matrix?

Coming out of the blackhole called work...retirement AMG, another thing - room dimensions. You are really close to cubic, and that's not good. I suggest that you look up University of Salford (UK) research into acoustics. They have done a lot of work on optimal rooms.
Coming out of the blackhole called work...retirement Welcome AMG.Life begins at retirement - at least, it did for me. I could not afford the system I wanted - so I began to build my own equipment. Consider DIY - it's far more rewarding than just buying stuff. Now after 15 years of DIY, I have an ESL ...
Aftermarket Fuses Not to hijack the thread, but there is an obvious difference with CIRCUIT BREAKERS: less internal resistance, better sound. Since internal resistance tends to be a monotonically decreasing function of current rating, it is a simple trade-off: more...
Reducing Background Noise On Records I suggest a $20 test.Send a record or two out for ultrasonic cleaning. I had a VPI 16.5, and now clean ultrasonically. Big differences, noise among them.
First investment into a turntable Set-up is very important and very under-rated. A well-set-up budget TT can outperform a poorly set-up unit at 10x the price. So you might want to buy from a local, maybe a dealer, who can do proper set-up.One more word: there are lots of people wh...
Set me straight, don't pull punches MP, if you like ML, you might want to audition Quads and Magnepans. I have owned and enjoyed all three, but eventually settled on Quads. I especially like the 2905's, now 2912's I understand.
What solution to clean silver and gold contacts? @ljgerens A question for you, please. I remove silver tarnish by putting the silver in electrical contact with aluminum foil, and immerse both in a hot solution of baking soda. The sulphate ion bonds to the aluminum, leaving the silver intact with...
Who makes budget speaker cables which are truly “good” or “exceptional” in quality? Who makes budget speaker cables which are truly “good” or “exceptional” in quality? You do!!@unreceivedogma is right. With two caveats:1. Unless you are running long cables, in which case you want to minimize inductance, by having the two conductor...
Any Bryston 4B3 amp owners out there? For a few years I used 3B and 4B SST’s on two pairs of new Quads, for casual listening, and AtmaSpheres for careful listening. The Bryston sound was good, the build bulletproof.Ancient history, I know, but might help a little. Why not call the fact... |
