Best Bang For The Buck I've Ever Spent
@bdp24 No, I’m afraid that I haven’t compared to the ET directly. That is a fine tonearm and one of my friends owns one.But - it’s high pressure, which means an oil compressor (maintenance), or a very very noisy oil-free unit. But - it’s hard to se...
Best Bang For The Buck I've Ever Spent
No contest on this. Resonance damping adhesive pads, used on drum kits, for my tonearm. Cost $10 for a significant difference. For a component, the Trans-Fi air bearing tonearm at $1000.For accessory, ultrasound.
Wine, audio, and music. How many of us Aphiles enjoy wine when listening to music?
Ooooh - '82 First Growths  -  can I come over and play?Wine is wonderful, serious listening is better, but I think they are mutually exclusive. For non-serious listening, as at a party, though - Burgundy and North Rhone by preference.
The use of the word "musical" as an adjective
Perhaps PS wants something specific.Listen to Barber's Adagio for Strings, twice, without wincing, once.
Opinion - Every audiophile should build at least 1 pair of speakers
I see audiophiles argue over thousands of dollars in speaker cables and interconnects, I think to myself, their opinions and biases about where to spend their time and money would be forever changed if they built but a single pair of speakers. I d...
Directionality of wire
@jea48 No, Jea, I didn’t read it - I skimmed a bit, and what little I did read seems to be perfectly covered by Al.Thanks Al. Somebody's got to speak up for science.
Directionality of wire
@jea48 Solid. They came off the spool and went to the plating company. No, I did not reverse them. I did not then, nor do I now, expect there to be a perceptible difference.I no longer spend much time on interconnects, for the reasons stated.
Directionality of wire
@jea48 Yes also to IC's.Further to the above, I forgot that about 20 years ago, when I saw IC costs going stratospheric, I decided to do an experiment.I built a cabinet for ARC SP10 pre-amp and Nakamichi CR7, which was a Faraday cage. I then noted...
Directionality of wire
@jea48 "Just a guess no one has experiment using bare uninsulated wires for ICs or speaker cables."I have. My ESL's are each powered by a mono block. Each ESL has a step up transformer, which must be resistor tuned. I put the resistor externally; ...
A vote for the little guy suppliers
@bigkidz "Ever see V-Caps or Vishay resistors or Plitron transformers come stock in any units?"You make a really good point. Perhaps THE point. Why not go to the smallest operator of all? DIY! Satisfaction in the doing, pride in the product, joy i...
Tonearm recommendations
Isn't the 208 unsuspended? If so, consider the Trans-Fi air bearing tonearm, which punches far, far above it's weight (and cost). I use two of them, on high class modern turntables.
A vote for the little guy suppliers
Small operations, agreed. When feasible.Trans-Fi for air bearing tonearms (which I have), and turntables (which I have not)K & K for transformers (good advice, superb product)AtmaSphere
Soundtracks and Film scores, your favourites
"Police" - the film score was the only vinyl recording of Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (#3). One of the most important pieces of modern, serious music, IMO."Rocky Horror", a guilty pleasure.
Inherited 21 piece of vintage McIntosh and need help building a system
Almarg nailed it.All you need is a variable AC voltage source, generically called a Variac. And a couple of garage sale speakers to load your amplifiers, or a couple of 50 watt 15 ohm resistors, or better yet, both. Do an initial powerup with the ...
Preamp 6922 tube help
I tried quite a few 6922 variants. By FAR the best was early '60's Telefunken  specially selected for Hewlett Packard  for use in their aerospace test equipment. The boxes bear the HP logo on their seals.I think that these were the last tubes that ...
