Do you use a wool record mat? Do you upgrade?
mats are a crap shoot....they all change the sound, but with a great variety of success (mostly failure). I remember the wool mat on either my Linn or Rega sounded (well)..wooley. There was a carbon fiber mat that I tried for awhile that changed t...
Reparation xv1s
Soundsmith, Neeleclinic et al will repair your cartridge, but it will not really be a XV1s. Its a bit of a crap shoot. You might like the resulting sound better, or not as much. The only way to get a real XV!s is to get a real one.
New mid level Turntable / cart / phono pre system
Here's my suggestion..... call/talk to VPI. They can recommend the turntable, arm and will install a compatible cartridge for you. You'll most likely save some money too.
upgrade or side step

PAD cables are highly colored....If you like that coloration use them, but the color will blend into the speaker sound.
Moderately priced 5 channel amplifier
New Home Theater requirements are very different from older requirements....to buy older equipment makes little sense to me. Modern equipment with HDMI inputs for video, and abilities for the many audio inputs...AirPlay, Blutoothe, wireless digita...

A/V reciever advice
I have a new Denon.....so I don't know about its longevity, however, I delighted with its performance, ease of setup, and capabilities.Denon AVR X3100 W
currently own a vpi scout, looking to upgrade
McBuddah.....I'll let you in on a secret that Harry told me. The Superscout rim drive/Classic Platter is a very minor click less than the VPI Direct Drive. It is nearly indistinguishable between the 2.
new to this
I certainly agree with Xti16. The proper road is to get the speakers first and then figure out what components work well with it.
