Do I need a record mat?
No thread is complete without Bill attacking sweeping statements with some of his own.
Denon DL-103SA VS DL-304
I use the 103c and 304. I recommend Bob's Devices step up transformers, didn't need the extra gain but improved the sound considerably. See the review on 10 Audio, I didn't see it until I had bought mine but it is close to my own experience. I hav...
Biwire with different cables?
Or very, very bad; depending on taste and system. The magnet wire I mentioned is available for about 60 cents a foot so experimenting with it is cheap. There are two schools on using the same wire, one holds that you can optimize the wire for the ...
Current Inexpensive CD Vs High Priced 90's
It was without any added power supply, just as it comes over here for $299.
Biwire with different cables?
I have done it both ways and both worked. I think much as you do, the central point for me is that the task is different for the wire carrying the bass signal than the higher frequencies. I am not a great fan of anitcable, especially on the bottom...
Recommended components on Stereophile Magazine.
If you want to return to those thrilling days of yesteryear when there was a small magazine that took no ads, appeared a little late sometimes and was staffed by committed audiophiles check out HIFICRITIC. Reviews and articles by Martin Colloms, P...
Current Inexpensive CD Vs High Priced 90's
I was extrapolating from the equipment I use and their placement on the HIFICRITIC rating system. I have a Musical Fidelity TriVista 21 which is discontinued and a Audio Synthesis DAX. Their test of the V-DAC gave it a rating of 42, which is close...
Amp output versus Speaker imput
Almost every case of speaker damage is from too little power from the amp. While it would appear that if the speaker would take 100 watts and the amp was rated at 15 you would be safe, this is not the case. If you overdrive the amp you will drive ...
Current Inexpensive CD Vs High Priced 90's
Get a Musical Fidelity V-DAC for $299. Better than most $2000 ones.
MOSFET
I think I read that the C-J 350 used JFETs, but not certain.
VPI HW 19 3.5 w/REGA 300 vs. VPI Scout w/JMW 9 arm
I would go with the Scout as it is a current model. None that I know of. The unipivot is a little different to align than a standard arm but not really harder. Stan
VPI HW 19 3.5 w/REGA 300 vs. VPI Scout w/JMW 9 arm
I have actually had a 19 -3 with a Rega and have a Scout now. However, as it was 15 years apart I can't give direct comparisons. The tables give , according to my memory, different types of sound. The 19 is a little dark but very relaxed, the Scou...
Opinions re Thorens tables
I have used the 125 many times but not recently. Build quality is very good. Get a replacement mat , the platter is prone to ringing if not well damped. Jaybo is correct, it would be much better than the decks you mention. There in a enormous amou...
MOSFET
They are tools, nothing more or less, some of my favorite amps have them, some do not. The GamuT amps , which I have been considering, have only one pair of transistors a channel, I don't know of any bipolars that can do this for 200 watts a chann...
Speakers under $700 for 8W Per Channel Tube SET
The first thing you should look at is the efficiency of the speakers. Most will not give enough volume; I would look for ones in at least the low 90s and preferably higher.
