Used 804 N or S vs New CM10 S2?
Sorry I didn't chime in sooner, but didn't think you were going on an electronics buying spree so soon. I would have recommended choosing the speakers first, then choose an amp that has the appropriate power and sonic traits that match well with t...
Which one...?
If you think the CD1 is very good, why not buy something like a used DAC3 VB and use the CD1 as a transport (assuming it works as a transport)? I was able to compare the CD2 as a standalone player and then as a transport into a DAC3 VB, and the DA...
Speakers or Amplifier
Not familiar with your wires either, but as interconnects and cables can make a significant contribution to what level of tonal color is revealed I'd probably start there too. I'd demo a full loom Acoustic Zen as I know them to be very organic sou...
Clayton Audio Class A amps. Need amp advice
Think it's fantastic you found the speakers that really do it for you. That's such a huge accomplishment. Given you seem to like a relatively tubey sound and that your speakers are a bit of a tough load, a better way to go may be to get the grunt ...
Can't get Acoustic Zen Adagios to sound smooth
Agree with Thewizard. You might contact Mark O'Brian at Rogue and see what he'd recommend for tubes. He told me a while back there's a particular tube he likes with the Medusa, so he might have a recommendation for the Sphinx as well. And Satori c...
Recommend Class a Amp
Yeah, in a quick search I wasn't able to find specs other than a reference to the Whitney in this Ultra Audio review, which is where I got my 100Wpc Class A spec from.http://www.ultraaudio.com/equipment/pbn_olympia_l_mini_olympia.htmI know that's ...
Recommend Class a Amp
This could be interesting...http://app.audiogon.com/listings/solid-state-pbn-sierra-audio-whitney-power-amp-2015-03-13-amplifiers-32713-debary-fl--2Looks like it can be run Class A/B or A, and it comes in at half your price target. 120 Wpc but dou...
Integrated with built-in accessible DAC bad move?
Personally I'd be more concerned about if the H300 as an integrated has the sonic characteristics your friend is looking for. If the DAC's pretty good too, bonus. Buy used -- there's one for sale here now -- and you won't have to sweat resale too ...
2 runs of wires or 1 run w/ jumpers
Oops. Thanks Al. Interesting post as usual. It is indeed resistance I was trying to get at but failed miserably.
2 runs of wires or 1 run w/ jumpers
Well, in my system I've been able to compare single and shotgun versions of my cables, and I slightly prefer the shotgun configuration. But this is with my speakers and my cables, so your experience could be very different. The sound is a little m...
"forward' vs "laid back" speakers
I've no doubt you heard what you heard, but really there are far too many variables to really make any definite conclusions. As others mentioned, upstream electronics and especially the room can trump what you think you're hearing from the speaker...
Preamp for Bryston 4B SST2
James Tanner told me the circuit in the BP6 is very similar to the BP26 with the main differences being the latter's outboard power supply and balanced connections, which would concur with Jaxwired's findings above. I have the BP6 also and agree w...
Bryston 3B ST vs NAD C 355BEE
I think a Class A amp could potentially be a great idea for the future. Clayton Audio and Plinius are two others you may want to put on your radar. Best of luck.
Rockport Avior or Magico S5
I agree, but this is relative. I like Magico very much too, but relative to Verity it will likely be more neutral or analytical than this OP may be looking for given his system and what he's trying to achieve. Verity and Magico are not, in my expe...
Best multichannel amp for quality stereo listening
If you're trying to simplify your system, I don't know if using the B&K is your best choice if it has no HDMI input as you may encounter some cumbersome video switching issues and you'll still need to buy a three channel amp. I think Kal's sug...
