Who makes a pre/pro with SACD Input?
Most pre/pro's have a better decoder than the one that sometimes comes in the dvd player. To use these you must use the digital output on the player. If you want to use the DD/DTS decoder that the player contains, then you must use the analog 5.1 ...
Damned if I Do and Damed if I Don't
Why not have a local wood shop build you a rack that fits in with the antiques, or you could alter an old chest or cabinet to hold your gear. It has been done many times by people with great results.
What's more important; sound or brand name?
With the mid-bass bump and the lack of much output above 15K the 901 is a good rock speaker for a young guy who wants to play loud, they can make some of the poor quality rock recordings sound pretty good. You can find the old 901's cheap.
Best Analog pass-through on DSP Theater Pre/Pros?`
The sunfire theatergrand II or III would be worth checking out, mine is very good at everything. Aragon would be worth checking out also.
Rotel RSP 1066?
The 1066 got good reviews as and is loaded, I would say that is a good buy on that pre/pro. I can't say I have ever used it but rotel is known for good products that are great bang for buck, their amps are good also. Stereophile did a review and l...
What to process/power my Vandersteens?
You may want to check out outlawaudio.com, value conscious gear for value-conscious people. I have never listened to any of their stuff, but have read good things about it. I would also check out the avsforum.com, they have used this gear over the...
Best Speakers for Musical Fidelity TriVista?
You may want to check out something that uses ribbons for the mid/highs.
Can my subwoofer sit right next to me?
Plato and Sean pretty much said it all, I would only add that the sub should not fire at the front speakers, face it to fire across the room. The sub should not really be placed in the rear of the room for music at all but could work out well for ...
How can you tell if a speaker has impedence dips?
I have read that some amps don't sound as good bridged, this could be another disadvantage if sound quality has to take a hit for more power.
The Amp Game,
Can't say I know anything about the sony amps, the Adcom mono's are pretty old, I would check with Adcom and see if service can still be had on them. They got a good review in stereophile years ago, class B if I recall. Aragon 4004 can be had in y...
The Amp Game,
What is your budget?
Suggestions for a monitor speaker
The Vmps 626sre is a great almost fullrange monitor, ribbon mid/high driver, bass tight and deep down to the 45hz range. These are about 45# each, around 23inches high. Osiris stands can be found at around $300 and work great with this speaker. VM...
Advise for CD player upgrade? Arcam? Rega? MF?
Used sony xa777es (1,500) sacd player, outboard dac of your choice for redbook ($500) if you don't like the sony's redbook sound. I have this player and IMHO, is very good redbook player on it's own.
Anyone who has tried spikes with the VMPS RM40's?
Bass definition with many, (not all) vmps speakers comes in the form of adjustment by means of small amounts of the putty that comes pre installed on the passive driver. This adjustment along with adjustment of rear pots on the speakers will do fa...
Sub and LFE settings on Surround Processor
Very good point Eldartford, speakers such as Magnepan, Apogee or other full range ribbon speakers do have deep bass responce, and do require huge force from amp which can degrade sound. My speakers are 9 driver/15inch active/15inch passive/12inch ...
