Active speakers. What to choose?
ATC SCM 50 is a classic that has withstood the test of time but it won't win a beauty contest and it is not rare - it will hold it's used value well (assuming you get a good "demo' or used price). The other two speakers are more elegant and are lik...
Symptoms of damaged drivers / crossovers?
Buzzing or distortion is often audible when a driver fails. Swap L & R channels to test speaker versus amp/source.
Subwoofers - Grille off or on?
I would add that the baffle step is usually somewhere around 400 to 800 Hz and edge diffraction is something that affects imaging mostly in the midrange and treble. Neither of these frequencies are terribly important for a high quality subwoofer t...
Subwoofers - Grille off or on?
We find it easy to hear cloth soften the attack of a kick-drum and reduce the percussiveness of a string bass. It is best described as hearing a 'mumble' or a 'stumble' in the 50-70Hz range. Huh? The "attack" on a kick drum is around 5 KHz. Most ...
options for highly compressed CDs?
SeeDeeClip software will help repair CD's. I have used it and verified it to good effect. It won't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse but it helps. Of course these forums are just for chat. Nobody should try it.
Subwoofers - Grille off or on?
Wrong. It depends on the baffle design. Many speakers will definitely sound better with the grill on.A grill on or off is irrelevant for a subwoofer and makes no difference.
Which artists' music do you buy without audition
Tom Petty
The Harbeth phenomenon
Pdreher,Agreed. It is primarily the dispersion that JA is uncomofortable with and the "untidiness at 800 Hz". (I think he is perhaps suggesting woofer breakup might be occuring at audible levels arpund 800 Hz - only down 24 db - a more aggresive x...
The Harbeth phenomenon
Tvad,Sorry I did not see your post.FWIW the M40.1 is really rather uninspiring - even Stereophile did not take much of a shine to it. The compact 7 and SHL5 are way better in the mids - these are the models that people seem to get excited about.Ha...
The Harbeth phenomenon
It is called mid range. Some people hear it and some don't. Those who love mid range will hold dear the qualities of a speaker like Harbeth. Soundlabs are another example and Quad ESL 57's are an extreme example ( precious little else is good on t...
Is JL best sub for the money?
The Zu subwoofer review is from a Wes Marshall, who uses ATC SCM50 speakers. If Zu integrates with ATC then it is indeed a "musical" type sub rather than a HT type. ATC bass is thin, precise and tight. ATC make a large 15" subwoofer but it is ugly...
If money were no object, what would be in your rig
I could change anything I want to - money is not a constraint. My only constraint is common sense. Common sense is probably the main reason I now find myself in the situation of having no monetary constraint. Some may recall my warnings about the ...
Is JL best sub for the money?
It is hard to beat at any price.
Dealing with a large TV between speakers
You also sit with your head near a wall - this is well known to collapse the soundstage and make if feel claustrophobic or constrained. It has nothing to do with your TV.
Dealing with a large TV between speakers
Your problem is not the TV - you are sitting along the short axis of the room. Have you ever seen a concert hall designed this way? No. And for good reason, the acoustic are not good in the orientation you have chosen
