Richard Clark $10,000 Amplifier Challenge - Why Couldn't Anyone Pass this Test??
@bdp24   Not surprised by your finding as Quad ESL can be an extremely tough load. Differences in amplifier damping (output impedance) would be quite audible. This only proves one of the major design issues with Quad.
Synergistic Red Fuse ...
+1 @almarg @aeoluskratos As some have stated, on badly designed equipment with under-rated fuses the fuse can be stressed on power up and resistance may rise leading to eventual failure. This used to happen in the past with Zinc based fuses. This ...
Sealed subwoofer for ESL-63
Subwoofers are not dipoles. At these low frequencies they behave as an omnidirectional source. On your budget it will be tough to find anything good enough to match the crystal clear quality of the quad - you also really need a high end sub for ba...
Richard Clark $10,000 Amplifier Challenge - Why Couldn't Anyone Pass this Test??
Everyone knows that well built solid state amplifiers designed to stringent specifications and tolerances are going to sound very much alike at low volumes. It would be a huge surprise if that weren’t true - it would mean that all those measuremen...
Has anyone had experiences good or bad with speaker isolation or isolation in general ?
@geoffkait   Stalking again I see!
Has anyone had experiences good or bad with speaker isolation or isolation in general ?
Isolation works to reduce parasitic sympathetic vibrations from floor and walls. For TT and tubes this also helps reduce feedback from floor/wall vibration. Other electronics are not sensitive enough microphonically and do not benefit except some ...
Synergistic Red Fuse ...
@oregonpapa   No Worries. Back in the day my dad did two open hearts a day - that was tough and recovery for patients was lengthy. These days with modern techniques it is a walk in the park.
Amps from the 1980's -- What gear holds up sonically? Reliably?
@captvideo Energy 22 are a great speaker are got mine at Bloor Radio in Toronto. Still have ’em along with a Kenwood C1 and M2
My 2000th Post
Congratulations! Major milestone. I enjoyed reading many of your posts over the years and still do.
what to do with 1000+ CD's, many imports and live concerts
Used CD stores will buy it for nothing and then google each CD for prices and then sell those that are rare for massive mark ups - often way more than the original price.Find some friends and give them away. Don’t feed those rip off used resellers...
Bass distortion before tweeter distortion with a monitor at high volume?
+1 sbjoeBass is very power hungry and may cause an amp to clip. A clipping amp will very quickly burn out the tweeter even at levels the tweeter could normally handle.Active speakers with separate amps for each driver will handle high SPL better.M...

Hearing is believing?........power cables.......
The equivalent of a dam is the large capacitors in a linear power supply. If big enough and filtered appropriately then the power cord only needs to be specified properly. If too small then performance will be variable depending on many factors - ...
Hearing is believing?........power cables.......
@decibell Explain. Why yes it is quite simple. Power can be noisy and badly designed components and appliances can make the power in your home noisier (even to the point of affecting other components) Switched Mode Power Supplies are a major culpr...

Unfortunately Wind and solar don't begin to compete economically with coal. Coal is inexpensive and clean coal burning electric power stations are just as practical as clean gasoline cars with catalytic converters and both have ultra low emissions...
