semi-budget sys - under 1450
If you like imaging see if you can get to hear some EposM12 speakers. Used they can be had for around $500 and I think they're a very good all-round stand mount speaker. New I think they're nearer to $800. In case you haven't heard of them Epos is...
Good DAC to go with a Pioneer PD-65 as a transport
I can recommend a used monarchy 22a or 22b .... .. however my recommendation is not on the basis of A/B comparisons with other DACs ... it is because ..1) you can get it for $250 used.2) it sounded significantly better than a stock Marantz CD67SE ...
either DAC or transport is giving troubles...
Since both channels come from a single data stream I don't think that the problem is in the transport. More likely the output stage of the DAC has lost a channel. I may be wrong, but I don't see how a transport or even digital cable problem can se...
Acoustic Research AR18 .. anyone know of them ?
Thanks for the help. I'll check out their condition. I've purchased a Mission Cyrus 2 amplifier to drive them. This is a very detailed amplifier with great bass drive so it sounds like a good match. As for repairs, if any are needed it sounds like...
Budget DAC with Optical Digital input
I have a Monarchy 22A which I picked up for $230 used here on Agon. It was a significant improvement over my Marantz CD67SE, and a HUGE improvement when I added a Monarchy DIP (which cost me $95, again on Agon). The Marantz is not a high end playe...
What's inside these aluminum/metal cases?
Hi Brian ... I guess it depends on your budget. Good sound can be inexpensive if you eschew features and keep the power requirements (and room size) down. This is the way I have chosen to go. I just don't have the budget for ML equipment. I neithe...
What's inside these aluminum/metal cases?
Both brystons look OK. I agree that there's a bit too much "loose wire" floating around for my liking, and much more than my densen integrated (which is a $1000 amp). The ML383 is neat, but it looks like you're paying for lots of stuff which may h...
cable cooker, do they work?
Or if you're in a hurry then 5 mins in the microwave on high. Please don't try this (or if you do let us know what happened). You could also short a car battery .. that would certainly burn them, and probably you too.
Need help with a pair of small speakers
Epos and proac are both rear ported. Both are great speakers, but I can't imagine for a minute that any rear ported cabinet will work close to the rear wall.
Need help with a pair of small speakers
Harbeth or spendor ls3/5 (or any used ls3/5). It's a sealed design and works very well set close against the rear wall. I have no experience with other Harbeths, but they are supposedly very good. The proximity to the rear wall will really narrow ...
European -vs- US high-end
I agree with Phild. I'd go as far as to make a broad statement that if your budget is $1000 or less per component then European, particularly British equipment is your best bet. It seems that US companies are more interested in the higher end of t...
Is bass-expander really good for stereo system?
why not get a subwoofer ? RELs integrate very well, and can be found used for about $800 up. It worked for me. What you're suggesting may work, but may strain your amp and main speakers, forcing them to work harder to drive low frequencies. I'd be...
monitor or floorstander?
sorry I can't help with the speaker choice, but I have the same size room and I'm using spica angelus (bass shy floorstanders, not ported) and a Rel strata sub. It works to great effect, but only if I have the speakers at least 2.5 feet from the r...
please help a rookie
Also, before you buy, please realize that the performance of your hifi is highly dependant on speaker positioning, and that optimum speaker positioning usually puts the speakers some distance into the room. See http://www.cardas.com/insights/rooms...
Speakers for Rega system
http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?spkrfull&1019325119&class&3&4&Mission 752 used for $700 .... sounds good to me. These speakers were a little on the bright side (but since Rega electronics are not bright this should work p...
