Toslink Survey / Please Participate
I tried a glass toslink against a cheap homemade 75 Ohm coax (RCA terminated) and preferred the coax. The Toslink didn't sound nearly as good. That said perhaps my cheap transport (Marantz CD67SE) is to blame ?
Cyrus amps - what do they sound like?
I have always liked Cyrus, and own a Cyrus 2 with PSX. They have a very clear and dynamic sound, with great bass. The PSX power supplies are a very worthwhile addition, and give them the ability to drive difficult loads very very easily. They are b...
Traditional looking speakers
Harbeth compact 7s. I challenge you to find a single bad word written about them, and they look really nice and a little bit retro.
I've finally lost it
I think your GF is correct. 3 LPs and a $4000 playback system. That's like the old joke about the guy with the $10000 hifi and 5 CDs .... different versions of the 1812 overture.
Turn on popping noise.
How loud is it? A subdued popping is quite normal (more of a low frequency thump). A pop that makes you wince and check the speaker cones are still attached to the cabinets would probably indicate an amp problem. My densen amp produces a little po...
Which turntable?
Don't forget the budget for the cartridge. I own a Rega planar 3 and I like it. I've never heard a project table. There are also Rega made tables by NAD, Goldring, and Moth that might be available for less. But a great, great starter table would be ...
REL Strata 5 and Stampede NOT to be sold in USA???
Sumiko seems to charge a huge markup for importing RELs. Frankly the price of new REL subwoofers is not competitive here in the US. I own a Strata3 which I bought used for $800, and for the price I'm very happy. Other people have recommended ACI f...
Celestion Ditton 44 Speakers
info@celestionamerica.comHave you tried celestion. They've been quite helpful for me in the past. They might have a replacement or be able to fix or recommend someone to fix the drivers.
Spendor S3/5 standard vs “SE” version????
The S3/5s are definitely verging on the boring and slow in my opinion. I have never heard the SE versions. The s3/5's sound is pleasant but in no way exciting. You'll either love the lack of edginess or be bored to death.(I was driving with Densen...
Sennheiser HD590 on an airline flight?
The HD280pro would be better. Sealed, cheap and sound pretty good also.
Looking for some sax sp music
Dexter Gordon, Our Man in Paris, on Blue Note.Sonny Rollins Volume 1 is also good.Paul Desmond is great, but I'd hardly describe it as ballsey wailing. For great blues sax there's a Doug Sahm CD "Last Real Texas Blues Band" that's pretty good.
GMA Europa discontinued?
The Europa is not discontinued, but will be a factory direct product from now on. Higher models will go through their existing dealer chain.I spoke with their new CEO this morning. She seems like she has some good ideas. Going factory direct was t...
Starter Turntable
Not everyone. I have a rega planar 3 with a Linn K-9 cartridge. I have about 200 albums. That's really the only reason I have a turntable. Many date back to when I was a teenager. My CD playback is a marantz CD67SE driving a Monarchy DIP jitter fil...
Starter Turntable
My experience is that you'll need to spend around $1000 minimum to get an LP playback setup (table, cartridge, phono preamp) that will compare favorably with a CD based playback. As for LPs you either buy used for cents each, but set aside lots of...
I'm frustrated with people who don't ...
I always tell people that they might not be interested in the differences, but they will certainly be able to hear the differences. So far nobody who has heard my system has denied that it sounds substantially better than anything they've previous...
