Vandersteen 5a. How refined a product are they
The just-released issue of "The Audiophile Perfectionist" (Richard Hardesty's quarterly audio publication) contains a lengthy review of the both the technology and the sound quality of the Vandersteen 5A. Hardesty was the first audio store owner t...
Vandersteen 5a. How refined a product are they
FWIW, I agree completely with Bigtee's comments. The first post in this thread regarding Vandersteen is inaccurate and misleading, and is apparently written by someone who has not listened extensively to the Vandy 5A. The 5A is one of the most ref...
MM phono stage
Look for a used Lehmann Audio Black Cube SE (the version with the larger power supply). It can often be found selling in the $400-450 range. It's an excellent MM preamp in absolute terms, and at the used price it's also an excellent value.
Ray Charles, which collection go get?
If you are interested in Ray's early (and probably best) years, you should also check out a 2-CD boxed set from Atlantic Records titled "Ray Charles: The Birth of Soul" (Atlantic 782310-2). The boxed set contains Ray's releases from 1952-1959, and...
best burning software :
Roxio's latest version of "Creator", Creator 7, is the one to own. It offers excellent flexibility for a wide variety of disk types, and it's easy to use as well.
Need Advice on BACK/SURROUND Side speakers
Take a look at the various surround speakers made by M&K. I particularly like their tripole models, and they now have several models for less than $400. Here's the link to their web site:http://www.mksound.com/surround_speakers.php
best rock voices
If we include doo-wop, R&B, the MoTown sound, the California surfer sound, etc., as part of rock history, we then need to include a lot of other candidates for "best voice". I propose that we revise the thread to better define the categories o...
best rock voices
This could be a long list if you want to include the entire history of rock. Some possible nominations might include:Elvis Presley; Chuck Berry; Roy Orbison; Jerry Lee Lewis; Jim Morrison; David Clayton Thomas; John Fogerty (the lead singer for CC...
Vandersteen model 1 and 2 history
The dates I am going to give you are approximate -- if you want specific production dates, I suggest you contact the Vandersteen factory in Hanford, CA (phone number is on their web site). The first Vandersteen that was sold commercially was the Mo...
Cable Madness
I'll comment only on your choice of speaker cables, since they are easier to recommend. There has been a good deal of discussion on this forum about Alpha-Core Goertz MI2 speaker cables, and I think you should add them to your "short list". From p...
Cyrus amps - what do they sound like?
I won't swear to it, but I think that the British high-end mag, HiFi+, did a review on this amp. You might check their Web page to see if their old reviews are archived.
Different types of speaker design and placement.
If you really want to place the speaker close to (or against) the wall, you might consider the Allison Model 3, which is reviewed in the new issue of TAS (page 99). The Allison's enclosure is triangular in shape, and (by design) is placed right in...
Toslink Survey / Please Participate
I used a Toslink connection for several years with my DVD/CD player, and was quite satisfied with the performance. Eventually, however, "audiophilia nervosa" set in, and when I bought my Bryston SP-1 pre/pro, I felt compelled to switch to a digita...

Jazz Piano?
In my previous post, I failed to include a couple of fine pianists that should have been included. Beyond the obvious omissions of Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck, I should also have listed Tommy Flanagan, Ahmad Jamal, Barry Harris, Roland Hanna, ...
