What price point favors separates over integrated?
Yes, I replaed the stock power cord with a 30 amp Elrod Signature 3.0. My kW500 replaced $17k of separates. That being said, I've heard a BAT system recently that made me very jealous. And the big ASR integrated makes me ponder a second mortgage, ...
Info on phillips SACD 1000 repair/mods
Oneobgyn is correct - I recently ran into the exact opposite of your problem with mine and was informed that the chips that most commonly fail are long our of production. Sorry - maybe we could combine systems and achieve playback of both formats :)
What price point favors separates over integrated?
There are additional benefits to separates, that may or may not be audible to all listeners, such as separation of power supplies in the power and pre, less crosstalk between co-mingled audio circuitry (that's debatable), and fewer heat dissipatio...
Power conditioning: APS, Eclipse, Velocitor, or ?
As a Velocitor owner I thought I'd chime in here. The Velocitor does not offer surge protection or traditional line conditioning (meaning attempting to regulate or recreate the incoming AC). The incoming AC is not altered, but delivered faster and...
What's your profession? Age?
My profession is software engineering. I'm currently employed as a system architect at a large financial company on the US East Coast. That's a euphemism for saying, they won't let me code anymore, so now I draw lots of diagrams with lines and box...
? for past and present Elrod statement users
I use a big statement on my amp - I have had great results with Cardas PCs on digital gear. The Cardas cables are not flexibility kings, but they certainly are more user friendly than the Elrod Statement, which I love nonetheless.
Where does your user name come from?
When I was in college I was in a grunge/punk cover band. Yes we wore flannel. Yes it's embarrassing now. Anyhow, our band was called "Splotch", for some forgettable reason. I created a bunch of flyers for a gig at my fraternity using Harvard GRaph...
Vandersteen 5A's...about to take the plunge
As Ben Stiller's salesman character in Starsky ans Hutch would say, "Do it! Do it!".
room treatment
Try this page: Because my room is small, and I listen about 8-9 feet from the speakers, I found that I had to modify the concept somewhat to prevent the PVC from adding to the slap echo I am fighting with my paneling. Or you could search for John ...
Budget Amp for Avalon Eidolon
You have made an excellent speaker choice! I have heard Eidolons sound magical with BAT VK-150 SEs, which are not outrageuosly expensive. Of course the likelihood of finding those used is not great, but their new price of around $15k is not outrag...
Top loading CD Player clearances
As an owner of 2 toploaders, my rule of thumb is 3-4 inches of space between the top of the player and the next shelf. Especially if the player has control buttons on the top as my Sony SCD-1 amd Moon Eclipse do.
Absolutely beautiful gear
The Walker Audio Proscenium Gold Turntable. I've had a couple of opportunities to share the same space with that magnificent piece. Neither garish nor utilitarian, the outward appearance is simple complementary to its sonic attributes.
What Bryston says about power cord...
What's a "powder cord"? That sounds ultra-tweaky. I bet powder cords were real popular with the 70's disco crowd :) Ok, I'll stop...
Best Genesis Album - your opinions please.
The Lamb. That's a tour I wish I could have seen. I think the most interesting post-Pete album is Wind and Wuthering.
Rarest Brands for Sale on 'Gon
I think in the case of some of these brands (at least the first 3 in the original post) they simply do not produce a lot of gear. They are big ticket, built to order, once in a lifetime purchases.
