Best Integrated Amp, Price no obstacle?
If you'd like to experience a traditional tube sound, and if cost is truly no object, the VAC Phi Beta would be an insteresting option, at almost $20k (!). I have owned VAC gear in the past and actually considered this when putting together my cur...
What age did the "audio bug" hit you?
30. Shortly after my 30th birthday I accidentally blew up my old Kenwood receiver. I did a google search on Audio gear, since I thought I should get something better, and my eyes were opened to a whole fascinating world or the high-end. As a guita...
Need help for a replacement of my Levinson 33H
You may also want to check out the Jeff Rowland 302 or 301 monos. I believe these are probably in the same price range as the big Levinsons and Halcros, but not as bulky size-wise.
Speed Box for turntable
Bernardwong, I have had great results running my HW-19 with the SDS. Given the age of my table I took the approach of upgrading the platter, arm, and cartridge, and when I wanted that final "push over the edge" (as Nigel Tufnel would say) I purcha...
Do you remember your first cd?
Yes - Close to the Edge, 1990, high school graduation present. Sadly it has oxidized and no longer is playable. So much for perfect sound forever. Thankfully, it is the only CD in my possession to have met that fate.
Best Dac/Transport Under 50,000
You may also want to check out the Zanden Signature separates as well. They have been getting a lot of coverage in the 'phile press lately, although I am not sure how easy they are to track down in order to audition.Cheers,
Nagaoka CL-152 Record Cleaner?
I have found this cleaner to be an OK first step if you have a particularly grimy record. For older flea market type records I use mine in coordination with my Nitty Gritty 1.5, and it world wuite well. It removes some of the "fugliest" substances...
Full range floor standing speaker???? 4K or so
I'd like to second the Tyler Acoustics suggestion, as well as the Merlin. The front ported nature of SOME of the Tylers make them an excellent choice if you are constrained - although I still would recommend getting as far away from that rear wall...
Advice on Spectral amps and preams wanted
Spectral also recommends matching the preamp to a Spectral amp. They also go so far as to say one must drive the Spectral power amp with a Spectral preamp. These recommendations are due to the wideband circuitry employed in the amps. It is for thi...
Should I try to upgrade or scrap it all
If you are on a budget and want the A/V flexibility offered by the Philips, but with better sound quality, you may want to try the Marantz 8260 or one of the modified Denon Universal players. If you'd like to stick with tubes, the Cary 308T is an ...
krell & merlin what next?
I know quite a few people have gotten satisfaction out of the Berning/Merlin and Joule/Merlin pairings, for what it's worth.
Where is Your Turntable?
Mine is around the corner, in another room, so I could avoid locating it behind the speakers. My speakers are located in my living room, which opens into the dining room. However, there is about a three foot deep wall that runs perpendicular to th...
Is SACD a dead format?
Sure looks like it. Have you seen how cheap Sony is selling some own SACDs on their site? Sad, becuase this playback format, and the associated recording and storage mechanisms held a lot of promise. Oh well. Blu-Ray anyone? I suspect that as mass...
stacked equipment isolation?
Hope your fireplace isn't one of those remote control gas jobs (like mine :). In all seriousness I had a similar problem in my second system, well really my wife's system. I opted for the isonodes. One of the other things you'll need to be careful...
Colorizing The Sound
Given that your DK Design integrated is a tube solid state hybrid, you might want to try swapping in different tubes to taylor the sound to your liking. Tube replacement can be expensive, but for the less technically inclided, it is an easier way ...
