Does anyone collect something else other than music.
I think I must collect hobbies:I keep Koi, play drums, I have a small road bike collection with the requisite vintage no’s parts, there’s my woodworking shop in the garage, golf, I have a small collection of mid-mod abstract animal sculptures, I h...
Suggestions for $2k budget
If you have modest space, that will be a big factor in determining the scale of speaker you put into it. What are your room dimensions?I suggest you buy the best bookshelf/small tower speaker you can afford for the space. An added bonus is that yo...
Dedicated 20 amp circuit - Electrician laughed!
My dad is a mathmatician and an electrician and a jack if all trades. He taught me to work on cars. When I was in college I told him that I put 120lbs of air in my bicycle tires. He laughed at me. He said a car tire doesn't take more than 35lbs.I k...
Analogue question
Does any of your equipment employ a wall wart?
have you ever bought stereo without listening first
I'm a bad example...except my first two bookshelf speakers I got at circuit city in my twenties, everything I've bought since has never been auditioned. But I tend to research the heck out of everything. I learned early on not to worry about specs...
New TT for ~$1500
I initially didn’t want a Technics either. I had already owned a 1200MK2 for many years and with a budget of 3k was looking at upper end Projects, Sotas and Music Halls...something new and different. I’m an industrial designer and I liked the aest...
Preamp with Phono $3-5k range
I never knew how good my Carver TFM-35 sounded until I got a Don Sachs tube preamp. Lots of detail and texture. They sound really good together. And you can build the Don Sachs to match the input impedance of the Carver.I use a Project RS phone am...
My Demo results: I feel like I'm at a frustrating block in my speaker journey
You really just can't pull out speakers 2-3 ft. in a room like that. Where's the room for that? You might want to consider keeping your rack and TV in the existing spot and having smaller speakers fire lengthwise in the room.Have you tried paper do...
My Demo results: I feel like I'm at a frustrating block in my speaker journey
Speaker placement and room set up is a science. The best thing to do right now is stop talking about components for the time being...and focus on exploiting the best layout based on what you have. Understand and solve that now. It will give you a r...
Most Musical 6NS7 tube for a Preamp?
Well, the Don Sachs Model 2 has evolved quite a bit from only a year ago. It has better caps, a full wave rectifier (you can hear the difference...as it ships with a half wave rectifier too), sealed input relays, better tubes, new housing/casing. ...
Not much talk about Yamaha turntables.
I agree, Technics just came out with the 1200mk7.Get that! It’s under 1k and it’s the original...all around better than the Pioneer and you won’t feel the need to upgrade too soon with a table like that. You won’t regret it.
Most Musical 6NS7 tube for a Preamp?
I think you will love the Don Sachs model 2. I have one with the last all-wood case because I didn’t want balanced inputs/outputs...but did want all the new upgrades/6BY5GA full wave rectifier mod. It is not ‘tubey’...and almost solid state like i...
Most Musical 6NS7 tube for a Preamp?
I recommend the Shuguang Treasure CV181-T/6SN7.I use them in my Don Sachs preamp. Lot's of resolution top to bottom, meaty and musical...it’s also quiet and reliable. I think it looks great too.But don’t take my word for it. Don Sachs has every ho...
Lifespan of amps and preamps?
I've seen a 'new in box' Marantz 8B for sale recently. But I think having some history/experience with a particular model/brand really helps take the mystery/risk away from buying older amps. In 2009, I bought a Carver TFM-35 that was still sea...
