Poaching vinyl in thrift shops
Refreshing post! I enjoy that experience also. In fact, most of my vinyl collection is from second hand shops. It's hard in the bay area (CA) to find the $1 albums because there are audiophiles that usually beat me to it, I think. But at Ameoba mu...
Are Preamps necessary?
Dazzdax is right on. Even though it may add another component in the chain, the preamp does something to the sound that actually helps it. Don't ask me why, but I've found the same thing. Rob
Von Schweikert VR-4jr owners, your thoughts?
elb,I actually went to an audio store in Berkeley, CA. I asked if they had any spikes (I was ready to buy some). They said since I travelled from San Jose to the store, they'd just give me some. They are just spikes with a locking nut (nothing fan...
Please explain in simple terms...brightness
Just blast an average car stereo with rock music and that harsh hi pitched sound that is like an ice pick to the brain is an example of brightness - an extreme example, but you'll know brightness after that. Rob
best recording of Diana Krall ?
I relistened to "love seens" and would probably have to concede to Zargon and others and change my vote to that rather than "live in Paris". Although, "live in Paris" is the one I listen to the most, because it is a great concert. Rob
SA-CD/DVD-A?
SACD and DVD-A obviously didn't catch on and take over. It still has a small slot in record stores. And it isn't new anymore. A lot of audiophiles predicted it was going to take the world by storm - It didn't. They were wrong. I think the reason t...
best recording of Diana Krall ?

I'm Very SCARED - Please advise, Cartridge Drop
I munch a cartridge before and it is the worste feeling. So I understand your consern, but it will last just fine. Rob
I completely lack fiscal discipline...
And you DESERVE it! lol If you need mobile music, then that is the way to go.
How Good Can Digital Get?
"what if this is as good as it gets"
Schweikert VR4-Jr vs. Gallo Reference 3 with SA
I agree with Aaccss. The vr4 jr is a very uncolored experience to my ears. It doesn't get much better than that. Great tweeter, midrange to die for, and bass lower and tighter than most speakers in this price range. That's why they got a great rev...
"Analog" = bloated, rolled off, soft and mushy?
I have a Cary 308T and prefer it to the much more detailed (and pricey) 303/200. Because it softens the "digital edge" some. You have to have decent tubes. I'm using Mallards. And it is smooth yet dynamic - nothing close to boring. The stock tubes...
Sound is too big for my room.
It's probably not the best match for the room. However, I have a small room with a big sounding system in it (smaller than yours) and what you can do is use absorption, more than normal. Because in a small room like yours the reflections happen mu...
Listening to my HD650's, a sobering experience...
Well, it all depends on your perspective. Usually it's the room acoustics that prevent the "perfect" soundstage you get from headphones. But, that's where the benefits end for headphones. The soundstage is not life size in front of you (just as li...
Soundstage and voices lean to the left side????
I think it's the recordings. I have had the same issue and on a lot of recordings the instrument or singer tends to be on the left of center. The best way to know is with a mono recording mentioned above. Rob
