Speaker compairson?
I would no doubt find a way to audition it no matter what feedback you get. Simply because the MicroUtopia's are such great speakers. I haven't heard much of the Talons. I'd like to know how in the world they get down to 19hz with such a small box...
How would you desribe Von Schweiket VR-4jr sound?
This is a tough one because it doesn't really have a sound. I would say for the VR-4jr everything is so neutral. The midrange is sweet but not artificially so. The highs are strong and smooth. And the bass is extended and tight. Something that is ...
Should I skip my power conditioner?
I also plug my amp into the wall and everything else into surge protector for the same reason Steuspeed mentioned. Rob
XA777ES vs Meridian 508.24 vs Gamut CD1 in redbook
Frano, It's hard to believe that a $550 DAC betters the 777. And that you thought the redbook performance was "poor". I would have accepted that something was better, but that it was poor and dissapointing sounds suspicious especially since it ran...
Another sign SACD is dying
Nrchy, It's good to hear a positive perspective. I think the people that are posting that stereo is dead are reading to many home theater magazines. Stereo has been dead for over 10 years. You need to seperate audiophiles from the typical consumer...
Should I skip my power conditioner?
I can't comment on that particular surge protection, but a while ago I bought the Monster HTS2000. It affected the sound in a negative way. Since then, I bought a Chang Lightspeed and it affected the sound in a positive way for a very reasonable p...
XA777ES vs Meridian 508.24 vs Gamut CD1 in redbook
I have modded xa777es. I wouldn't buy another CD player for redbook. The only way to better it would be to get an outboard DAC for redbook and still use it for SACD. You won't improve on the transport by much without a megabuck CD player. So, why ...
It's funny how records are still best.
Onhwy61, I agree reel tape sounds better than Records, but I was speaking about mass produced formats, not recording studio equipment. Basically anything that has been on shelves at record stores. You have to draw the line somewhere. I haven't see...
DVD-A question
I certainly don't doubt the performance of DVD-A - in fact, I think it sounds marginally better than SACD, but I had to go with SACD simply becuase DVD-A was too scarse. I'm sure someday if it is still around I'll get a Universal player. Rob
Cary CD308 Display
I have the 308T - never had this problem. I wouldn't think it was just a glitch. It's definately a problem. But if it doesn't affect the sound then...Rob
DVD-A question
As bad as the software selection for SACD considering how long it's been out, DVD-A software selection is dismal. Add to that all the setup irritations and limitation, and the only thing I give it credit for is surviving. Did they give up on the f...
How do I go backwards?
Why not sell it all. Then you can start with a modest system and upgrade as funds become available. That way you'll be starting over rather than making an existing system worse. In other words a fresh start with quality budget components and upgra...
Any problems with Springsteens DualDisc?
I got the DualDisc "Kind of Blues" by (you know who) and it played 3 songs on my Sony XA777ES and then just stopped. I gave up after that. Thom_y, I understand your frustration, but what the h#ll are we going to do. Business rules and we are peasa...
How do you 'listen' to new music?
Tim, I think most people are like that. One nice thing these days is that you can download a song (or sample) and test it out before you buy a CD. In the past it was just hoping the CD was good without any idea what was on there unless it was on t...
How do you 'listen' to new music?
Oh I forgot to mention: "The Joy of Music" by Leonard Bernstein is a great book that talks about Music including Jazz and Classical. Rob
