MC appears to be correct that it's likely a crappy file through streaming. I would try an LP or CD source of the same music and see whether you still get muffled mids.

Speaker purchase question
I think that the seller should have mentioned that the grills were not included. Indeed, it seems that practice and precedent on the ’Gon is that grills are included in the sale unless specifically excluded. 
Brand Synergy
I prefer brand synergy when it comes to the amp/preamp relationship. Other than those two components, mixing and matching is fine for me.
