Does Wilson Sophia Sound good at low volumes?
I can't comment on the Wilsons but my N802's sound just fine at low volume levels (70db range). I would get rid of the solid state amps and switch to a good tubed amp. The upper bass and lower mids will become fuller allowing for a better balance ...
Audio Research SP 11 vs Audio Research SP 16
That comparison shouldn't take more than 10 min. The SP 16 was trounced in a comparo I did with the Manley Shrimp. I would expect you would need to look at an LS26 or above.
How important are the Speaker Cabinets?
Viridian, you are absolutely right. A recording is an approximation of the original event at best. In room #1 we have components A,B, and C. The origninal recording engineer has listened to the playback and proclaimed it to be an excellent recreat...
centering the human voice
You might post a photo of your setup. IME if one speaker has corner loading (a sidewall and frt wall) and the other side does not (only a frt wall) you will never achieve a consistent center balance. A controlled directivity monitor versus your fu...
grilles on or off the speakers??
There are no grilles on my ESP speakers. The fabric covering is permament, so comparison is not possible. An obvious choice by the speaker designer to have you not listen without the fabric.I prefer the appearance of my N802's with the grilles on ...
old cdp that hangs with new ones
Sony 608esd from 1989. It was 900.00 list and I paid 720.00. I still use it in my secondary system and it still sounds fantastic. In fact, there is one listed now for 150.00.I have had three other Sony players that were more expensive when new tha...
has anyone had a CLASSE AMP CA300 modded
I have no experience with the other CA models, only compared with the DR8. The heatsink metallurgy between these two amps sounded very different. The CA300 had the upper hand in deep bass response but the DR8 was superior from the mid band up. Wit...
has anyone had a CLASSE AMP CA300 modded
The heatsinks on the CA300 ring like a chime. Try to dampen the fins. When I had this amp, I used some thick mdf wood panels and brass weights across the top of the fins to damp out the ringing. This cleaned up the sound to a remarkable degree. Th...
Cartridge Alignment HELP
You might consider purchasing the Michael Fremer DVD on how to setup a turntable. I purchased mine on Amazon for twenty something dollars.
Audio Research Ref 110
And, the Ref 110 replaced what? Are the cables the same, have you tried anything different? Does it sit on the same rack or stand? Have you tried different equipment supports/isolators?I have two VAC amps that I swap back and forth and for each to...
Interfacing Speakers & Stands
In my secondary system, I use Chicago stands which have threaded steel spikes to couple stand to the floor and speaker to stand. That is how they were meant to be used, and it sounds great. In the last issue of Hi Fi+ they reviewed the Guru speake...
Cat friendly or actually unfriendly speaker
How about Duevel Planets or Venus speakers? They have no fabric grille and nothing flat on top for the cat to lay on. They are good sounding speakers as well.
Sweetest SS preamp for Classical?
I would also join in the recommendation of Classe DR5 or DR6 as excellent choices in the solid state camp that would be within your budget.
Bad preamp choice?
Who gave the PV10b the bad review? I haven't heard anything bad about CJ products. There is no product perfect for every taste. I had a Yamaha pre and it was decent for the price. The CJ will be a major upgrade. You have something exciting to look...
thinking of trying vinyl
Just wanted to ask.Rhljazz,How any CD players have you purchased to get to where you are now? If you did spend the same on a TT as you have your CD players/Dac your vinyl would rival you CD's IMHO.Hevac1 (System | Threads | Answers)The Linn Karik/...
