Warm and accurate bookshelves that can handle volume
Lintons, LOL Love mine. You had me a warm and accurate.
Vintage amplifier specifications
Agree with others. Solid state high current survivors just don’t struggle with speaker loads. My old Crown offers only one set of outputs but lists power specs for 16, 8 and 4 ohm loads.
But is it HiFi? (Crown)
Built three systems around serviced Crown PS-200 solid state analog workhorses. No fans, brilliant chassis, great specs (especially damping) and clever multi mode Class A/AB/AB+B output stages. Sinister rack mount look and lots of high current ove...
Those singers you enjoy,....that don't really have a great voice?
Ted Hawkins - Great street singer, briefly recorded in the 1990s before dying young.
Cheapest but good cables….
Mogami lead VERY helpful, giving them a shot at the great price celtic66 shared here.
Why does pulling out main speakers from wall improve sound?
Great discussion. Much good info. Varies much between speakers but the answers that addressed “baffle step” ring with me (see what I wrote there). As a Wharfedale Linton Heritage speaker owner, I’m a fan of the current wave of throwback big boxes…...
Favourite Guitarists
In case somebody missed them :) Bryan Sutton, Marcus Smart and Billy Strings They’re all in my tight rotation along with any generation of Allman Brothers guitarists and the incomparable slide work of Bonnie Raitt and Lowell George.
Is a highly discerning system enjoyable?
Slight hijack about quality of recordings. I’ve had the time and funds lately to add an ESS Sabre DAC equipped Bluetooth receiver while breaking in my Lintons. This led to extra music time than typical. Been impressed with musicality of recent ac...
Is a highly discerning system enjoyable?
The thread we’ve all been waiting for :) Kidding aside, this is a great point of discussion. I think there are two ways to answer. 1. Some (maybe most in active forums) listen to their equipment and can pursue resolving clarity at the expense of ...
Crown XLS 2500 - the best amp value per dollar?
Fun thread. As with many hobbies there are nooks and crannies in HiFi. I’ve built three systems over years using old Crown PS-200s purchased for around $100 out of commercial audio applications - little churches, schools and even pre-THX movie the...
After fifty years… amazing. What high end audio can be.
What a pleasant thread. Thanks. Turned 70 on Christmas Day and spent a little bit of the day enjoying our hobby. Just returned to home hifi five years ago, even though my career arc has taken me through broadcast and the large outdoor music event ...
Why are so many people spending so much money to build “perfect” streaming system?
Waxing philosophical for second or so on the occasion of my 70th birthday (born 12/25/52) I’m pretty sure there’s no such thing as “sitting pat on what we know.” Lots of great answers here to this fair question. With so many new artists, remasters...
Why are so many people spending so much money to build “perfect” streaming system?
Streaming has come of age, and IMO is also becoming affordable at HiFi quality. I am thrilled to see (and own) a Bluetooth receiver smaller than a box of kitchen matches that supports lossless codecs and sports a SABRE DAC chip whose dynamic range...
Why are there so many wooden box speakers out there?
In the real world, I’m a marketing guy, As a partner in a regional shop that has prospered through all the changes in delivering marketing communications over the last 37 years, our team knows one thing for sure....perception is reality. The entir...
Candidates for best speakers in the $2000-5000 market
If current popularity is a guide, Harbeth, Mission, KLH, JBL and Wharfedale big box, low baffle step throwbacks may be worth a chat as a category of speaker within this discussion. Because hi-fi is such an immersive technical hobby there’s not mu...
