Chopin Fantasie Impromptu, Opus 66 Newbee, do you have acces to the liner notes to tell me the recording engineer on the Kissin? If it's who I think it is, I might have an interesting story about the recording that might shed light on its sound.Very strange about the Hewitt recordi...
Best EL-34 Amps? Jadis JA-30s or JA80s with EL-34s, if you like the older Jadis sound. A little light in the bass perhaps when you use that tube type, but a glorious midrange. Very refined and natural (non-electronic sounding) amplifiers, among the best I've heard.
Beethoven Ninth Symphony I like both the Vanska SACD with the Minnesota Orchestra and the 1963 von Karajan version (I don't have that SACD, but do have the vinyl, it seems to have been recorded before DG started going crazy with the multimiking so it's a decent sounding r...
Which of Mozart's No.39 & 41 CD should I get? I agree with Kal, the Linn set is a very good one, plus you get No.40, my favorite of his late symphonies. I believe Mackerras did some earlier recordings of these symphonies with Telarc as well, not sure if they're still in print.
Note for those who buy used equipment... Almost sounds like he's talking about warranty repairs, rather than repairs you'd have to pay for. Is that a possibility?
Best all around speakers Agree with Shadorne, Dunlavy (and Duntech's Classic series) are speakers that are very good on all genres of music that I heard on them. And from their measurements it appears that they were designed with accuracy in mind, so that might have somet...
Genuine Telefunken? I can vouch for the Jadis/Telefunken match, in my JPL and JP80 the Telefunkens sounded far more lush than the Mullards I tried, so go figure. It's good to try other types (Amperex Bugle Boy 6DJ8s sounded great in my JP80's phono stage, better than...
Gas or Charcoal I rub two sticks together and only use the finest twigs I can find in the backyard.
New music on vinyl Keep in mind that classical CDs don't sell nearly as well as pop to begin with, so the lack of demand would turn off the major record companies regardless of a perceived lack of demand for the format. Then add to that the fact that, due to the exp...
Wilson MAXX 2 vs Watt Puppy 8 Your room should be plenty big enough, and I think Goatwuss's and Jfrech's posts are spot on. I personally don't like the current WP, feeling it's too bright and hyper-detailed(very fussy to set up right too), but I do like the Maxx, as I feel tha...
dynamic range -the good and bad? Glowplug, the "scratchiness" you're hearing is likely the analog tape hiss. Comes with the territory on well-remastered analog recordings. As does dynamic range with classical recordings--while there might be some slight compression and gain-ridin...
NAD's best tape deck....6325? 6300 Monitor series was their best; I don't think they made many more after it. Still have mine, though I rarely use it anymore.
advice for retubing of Jadis JA80 I had a pair of that vintage. They came stock with GE 6550s at the time, which were serviceable but nothing special, and the worst of the types you could use in the amps (unless you scored some Tung Sols). Your tubes were probably substituted by y...
advice for retubing of Jadis JA80 I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions. In mine, it depends on the age of your JA80s and your sonic preferences. Older models, before they started using KT90s, sounded best to my ears with Gold Lion/GEC KT88s, but I like a romantic, lush sound. Vin...
A good DAC: AN kondo, dCS or EMM labs ? Well, I finally got to listen to the Memory Player (as a "transport") in my system using both my Audio Logic 2400 and EMM Labs DCC2SE DACs, and compared it to both my Forsell and EMM Labs CDSD SE transports. The Forsell (through the Audio Logic) c... |
