Bach's Toccata
I like that one as well. If you want something, uh, different, you can look for the Virgil Fox D to D recording on Crystal Clear (I think it's called The Fox Touch). Fox used a lot of different tone colors in the organ on that piece that others do...
Nearfield Acoustics Pipedreams
I have always liked these speakers, snd agree with Larry that properly set up they indeed can be magic. I cannot hear the comb effect, the bass was outstanding, and the soundstaging and dynamics were superb. There was some talk that the crossover ...
Lamm M1.2 v. ML2.1
All tube (remember, the L2 does not have tubes in its signal path, and I do have a preference for tubed preamps), a bit more natural and real sounding to me, probably in part due to its reproduction of microdynamics. I have always liked Jadis equi...
Lamm M1.2 v. ML2.1
I can only comment on the LL2 (original version) vs. the L2, both of which I heard in my system (the LL2 for several weeks), so take it with a little salt. The L2 was more refined, a bit more neutral, with ultimately deeper bass extension (the LL2...
Budget Strategies forTightening up Bass?
Not exactly sure what you mean by tightening the bass, but if you have a bass hump that makes the bass seem overly ripe you might first try moving your speaker position to see if there is a room interaction that is part of the problem. How close t...
Audio's Biggest Loser?
For speakers, maybe the Maggie MMGs? For components, I recall that the 47 Labs pieces were rather small; for more conventional, the Meitner PA6 and STR 50/55 preamp/amp combinations were small and comparatively light.Cost per pound would have to g...
The best speaker you ever heard?
Duntech always touted that the Sovereign and Princess could accurately reproduce a square wave, and had the graphs to back up the claim. I believe they are still in production, though I have not checked their website for a while. Dunlavy as well, ...
SHM SACD's need to be burned in
I still don't believe it either. Was your SACD player on for as long as you had it on playing the disc (2 days) before you first listened to the disc? Maybe that has something to do with it?
Jadis amps and pre-amps still competitive?
Yes they are, if you value the Jadis house sound (I personally think that sound will never go out of style). And they work fine with Lamm amps as well.
Question about Spectral DMA-180 Power tube
I thought the Spectral amplifiers are all solid state, no tubes. Is there a different name for what you're referring to as a "power tube"?
Vandersteen 7 at Audio Connection
Joe, you must have come in after I had to leave (church choir obligations), sorry I didn't get to talk with you. I got to listen to the 7s before everyone went in to hear them (privilege of being the Prez and a long-time friend and customer of Joh...
Music to die to
I'll add one more to my original list, if I'm still around--Morten Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna.
How do designers fare when they change companies?
John Curl and John Dunlavy also come to mind. I agree with Stanwal, the designer generally does tell me more than the company name.
Anybody own any direct-to-disc LP's?
Tonywinsc's recommendation for the Beethoven is spot on. Astonishing dynamics; our audio club has been very impressed with it. RCA made a few D2D recordings in Japan at that time (I think it was around the mid 70's), using Japanese artists--I have...
Reference 3a Grand veena or Duntech Sovereign
Wasitpon: I agree with Tbg, 1200 watts from your amps should work fine.Make sure you're sitting at least 10 feet from them to get the best integration of the drivers.
