Nola Metro Grand Reference Opinions I have heard the Nola Metros and the Baby Grands, as well as a number of Wilsons and Avalons. Ultimately, you really have to hear for yourself, each is different and has its strengths and weaknesses (mostly strengths--at this level, these designs ...
Top 5 Classical recordings I agree with the Heifitz recommendation for the Sibelius, I own it and it is indeed a classic account. Will have to check out the Mutter recording, Newbee's description sounds enticing. I also agree about the Khachaturian VC; there is an excellent...
Jadis JA-30 vs JA-50 need opinions Ditto! Looks like you "get" what the Jadis sound is all about.
Jadis JA-30 vs JA-50 need opinions In listening to the JA30s, keep in mind that the brands and types of tubes used can have a decided influence on the sound, especially the small input tubes (I prefer vintage Telefunkens, but others have their favorites as well). Since the 30s can ...
Kubala Sosna Cables - Reality Check I would agree with the "warmer" assessment, I guess, up through the Emotion line, though the "warmness" decreases somewhat as you go up the line. I would not characterize their top-of-the-line Elation cables as warm-sounding at all, though.
Which song you would love to wake up to? Thank you, Rrog for the Groundhog Day reference! You beat me to it.
What's the oldest piece of gear in your system? Basis Ovation turntable, which I bought used around 1990. Had it upgraded to incorporate the Debut's platter, bearing and vacuum hold-down system, but the basic turntable is still a beauty, exceedingly well-designed and built and has served me (an...
Choral Music Suggestions My favorite scaled down version of the Durufle Requiem (probably because I know some of the singers and have heard them perform in concert and at a few funerals) is the Voices of Ascension recording on Delos, surprisingly called The Durufle Album....
Choral Music Suggestions I would suggest you pick up the Hyperion SACD of works by Morten Lauridsen, with his Lux Aeterna and O Magnum Mysterium. A contemporary composer with his own musical language, but some of the most moving choral music I have ever heard or sung. You...
Why is volume disappearing? From your description it sounds like a protection circuit may be kicking in. A lot of things could cause that. If the original tubes don't correct the problem, I'd contact CJ.
krell ksa 50 I agree with Unsopund, the original KSA 50 (NOT the KSA 50s) was a pretty nice-sounding amp, particularly in the Mark II version, probably one of Krell's sweetest-sounding units, but it would likely need a full blown refurbishing, which would be e...
rear firing tweeters.... My satellites have rear-firing tweeters as well as the front ones. It certainly adds to the spacial qualities of the speaker system, but the stated goal of the designer is to even out the in-room high frequency response.
Jadis JA-30 vs JA-50 need opinions While the JA-30s certainly won't have the power of the Defy, in my view they are the more refined amplifier by far. The sound of the JA 30s would be more akin to the DA88 thsn the Defy, IMHO.
Jadis JA-30 vs JA-50 need opinions I'm going from years back, as I haven't kept up with current production, but I believe the JA 50 uses KT90 tubes, where you could use EL34s, 6550s and KT 88s with the JA 30s. IMHO the Jadis amps using KT90 tubes sound perhaps cleaner than the othe...
An SACD question I still buy them, as there are still a lot of classical releases and the sound is still better to me than Red Book CD. |
