Aesthetix Io vs Lamm LP2
Rich: One thing you didn't mention in your post is the cartridge you're using. The Lamm has 57 db of gain, which is sufficient for my low output (.2mv) Koetsu RSP, but I really have to turn up the volume on the Jadis JP200 I use as a line stage to...
Which Beethoven's symphony do you like the best?
Eldartford: Yes. I guess that my problem with the 9th, and it was my problem with the Mahler symphonies as well, is that the ending just seems to start and stop too much to make it coherent to my admittedly structured way of analyzing music (contr...
Aesthetix Io vs Lamm LP2
Actually, Rich, which one do you have in your system? I've only heard the original two-box version of the IO, not the one with the two power supplies, which I'd imagine is better (but still too many tubes to take care of!).
Aesthetix Io vs Lamm LP2
I would call the LP2 neutral as well, and dead quiet to boot, quieter than the IO's I've heard (and they're no slouches in that department either). I have not heard the IO in my system, but would put the Lamm on the same sonic playing field based ...
SACD 2 channel vs Redbook 2 Channel
Durham: On your first point, I would say that, perhaps unlike others, I don't consider the differences between CD and SACD (or 24/96 DADs I've heard) to be earthshaking or of a magnitude that would dwarf the use of a substantially better analog st...
SACD 2 channel vs Redbook 2 Channel
Durham42, comparing a Sony with the Linn is not a fair test, the Linn is arguably the best one-box player out there, at least to my ears, and the Burmester is a top of the line DAC, while the stock Sony is comparable to a Wadia 830/850 level playe...
Which Beethoven's symphony do you like the best?
I like the 7th the best, principally because it's a joyful one and I've always found the second movement to be hauntingly beautiful. Eldartford, you're not alone, apart from the second movement, which I think is perhaps the greatest "dance" moveme...
wilson puppy with martin logan descent??
I agree with Jfrech--I don't believe the ML is in the same league as the WPs. Perhaps a really good REL might work, but to be safest use a Wilson Watchdog or WHOW, if you really need that last half octave of bass.
Recording quality of Dorian?
Dmitrydr: I never noticed anything wrong with the Reveries CD. Will have to listen to it again, but I'm not sure what you're talking about--any specific tracks? There is a very light bass drum roll in the Sibelius which might be the "hum" you're r...
Recording quality of Dorian?
Absolutely agree with Newbee. Dorian has been one of the "audiophile" labels for a long time in terms of their sonics, and their smaller ensemble recordings from the acoustic gem called the Troy Music Hall, which is the town where they are or were...
Digital as good or better than YOUR analog?
My redbook digital rig is very good and I enjoy listening to it a lot; my SACD playback is even better. Both of these rigs have substantial advantages in certain areas over my Basis/Graham/Koetsu analog rig, particularly in the areas of bass exten...
Tube DACs
Rx8man, you can tune the sound you want with virtually any tubed DAC (or anything with tubes, really); if you have an earlier Audio Logic without the transformer upgrade, you have 4 tubes to play with, 2 if you did the upgrade. The problem of cour...
Active Dampers
First pork chops and now cats? I'm beginning to think that you have too much time on your hands...
Comments of recommendations on Xmas music
Big_ed, did you forget to tell us the swing disc's name? If you like Jimmy Buffet, he's got a Christmas disc that's got some fun numbers ("Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum").
Telarc recording quality
In answer to Kana's question, while I don't have an EMM Labs player, my heavily modded Sony is plenty good enough for me to note that the SACD versions of Telarc's recent releases are superior to the redbook versions. A lot of that muddiness I not...
