GE 6550's
I don't know if GE is still making 6550s, but when I got my Jadis amps in 1990 they were and I had their 6550s in my amps. In the Jadis equipment, the GEs could not hold a candle to the Philips 6550s I got to replace them, nor to the Svetlana 6550...
Which Sony: SCD-1, XA777ES or XA9000ES?
The SCD-1. Take a look at Audio Asylum on this, there are a lot of posts on this topic on the Hi-Rez Highway forum. The big difference is the transport, which was a cost-no-object job on the SCD-1 and, according to the posts I recall, a much bette...
Would Audiogoners be interested in this?
This seems like a great idea. I've been following the Hi-Rez section of AA for info on SACD releases, but would welcome a section here as well that would cover all formats.
What are the best speakers for Mahler?
BIG speakers!! :^) Seriously, while any system can play Mahler symphonies and be satisfying in its own way, in my view to get the full emotional impact of Mahler you need full range speakers (nearly flat extension at least into the mid-30s (bass d...
Alnico Tweeter Replacements for Alon Vs
If Alon says that's all you need, that's great--then just be demanding on any supplier to be sure that the drivers you get are the right ones and as closely matched as possible.
Alnico Tweeter Replacements for Alon Vs
Although I'm no technical expert, I'd beware of trying to do this one myself. Does Alon also have to change anything in the crossover for the tweeter (often this is the case, even for a driver with the same nominal specs)? And you may not get twee...
Kharma, Wilson Sophia, JM Labs I'm confussed????
I too think you have a nice system. Given your room size, I'd be careful about going with a large full-range speaker, it could overload the room in the bass and you'd lose the flexiblity you have with the separate sub to control the deep bass leve...
Get rid of the Dunlavys?
Seems to me that you're contemplating more a lateral move than an upgrade. I would normally advise against that path. I am not familiar with the Denon, so take this for what it's worth, but you might want to consider whether it's the electronics i...
Another AudiogoNer in the NY Times
Welcome to the club, Vinh! At least I wasn't quoted in my article (never made the editor's final cut), and I know you looked better in your picture than I did in mine!
Digital as good or better than YOUR analog?
On a more serious note than I indicated to Psychicanimal, but on the same point, I have noticed that as I have improved my analog front end, and as I have listened to more and more of the reissues of classical recordings from the 50s and 60s on vi...
Digital as good or better than YOUR analog?
Sorry to hear that, Psychic. My condolences... Keep trying, you may still be able to get it right! :-)
Tonearm cable recommendations
Jbatlanta: Let me be the first to say, on behalf of the analog brigade, that part of the reason the rest of your system sounds worse is because you're comparing it to your best source! :-) The Valhalla will help, but your CD player ain't analog! E...
Custom Made Dust Covers?
I second Fmpnd's recommendation. Vinh's a member of our audio society and does a really nice job on the dustcovers.
Is it possible to use the amp section of a int amp
My recollection of the DIA was that the preamp portion of it was passive, so there was no input which would bypass the preamp section. You might try just using one of the inputs, but I don't think you can go directly into the amp. However, it was ...
New vs Used when buying please share thoughts
OK, Geoff, I'll take the bait! If, as you say, you are new to the hi fi world, then buying used could be a long process involving a lot of trial and error and likely disappointment. My advice to my friends just starting out has always been to go t...
