Telarc recording quality
Brauser, are you referring to their jazz recordings (which I haven't listened to)? With full scale orchestral recordings the balances are generally quite natural as, other than for soloists, Telarc rarely uses any spot mikes, as I understand it. T...
Telarc recording quality
Your ears aren't screwed up, but there is some disagreement among listeners as to the sound quality of Telarc releases. In their classical recordings, their general practice has been to record principally using spaced omnis, which results in a spa...
looking for a warm ss amp....
My Meitner suggestions, particularly the STR 55, are well within your price range. Get a used Meitner PA6i preamp to go with it, it will be as warm as you could want, with the "plus" upgrade available at some point from John Wright when you have t...
Stereo Tube Amp Recommendations
Oops, forgot it was a stereo amp. Make that the VTL ST-150.
Stereo Tube Amp Recommendations
VTL MB 185s should be on your list, I think they come in that price range. They excel in the areas you mention.
looking for a warm ss amp....
Good grief, you've gotten a lot of suggestions. One more to add from the used market would be the Meitner STR 55 stereo amp or MTR 101 monos, very rich, tube-like amps without any of that treble that you so dislike. They can likely be updated by J...
Comments of recommendations on Xmas music
A Charlie Brown Christmas on SACD--I still prefer the vinyl, but this gets part of the way there.
Interconnects:Dazed and Confused
Excellent advice from both of the prior posters. I'd just add that the more expensive interconnects in a company's line generally do less "damage" to a signal than the less expensive offerings, but will consequently be more revealing of flaws in s...
Audio Research pre amp question
Ron, you'd better tell the folks which LS model number you're talking about, they start with the LS1 and move up from there! Of the LS series, my personal favorite is the old LS5, which to my ears was the least solid-state sounding of ARC's line s...
Exceptional Recording of Carmina Burana
I agree with Rel, I find the Runnicles/ASO SACD to be superior to the Shaw, which I like (particularly the soloists) but have always felt was a little too restrained (it is supposed to be an orgy, you know!). Superb sonics. I should probably get t...
Tube Pre w/ Ex. Phono Stage
If not the Audible Illusions, perhaps a Quicksilver (if you want classic tube sound) or an Audio Research SP9 or 14?
Your 5 Stupendous SACD vs Redbook
Just found this thread, there ya go, Ben! :-) I'd recommend any of the three discs in the current SFO Symphony Mahler cycle, the 6th Symphony in particular for the Hammers of Fate in the final movement; the Vaughnn-Williams Sea Symphony, Music of ...
Naxos CDs with Great Sound
Along with the others mentioned I'd add the Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 1 (8.550806), a very good reading and recording that I listen to often. I'll particularly second the Jason Vieaux recording of guitar works--I heard him in NY Saturday night in ...
Upgrade or Mod?
Not sure if and what mods are available for the particular unit you use, but have you considered modifying the Sony (Audiocom mods, Stan Warren, Dan Wright and others)? That way you could have your SACD improved as well.
NJ Audio Society?
Geoff: You're a ways out west from many of our meetings, but we have had recent meetings in Branchburg and Warren, so you might find some of the meetings interesting and accessible. As far as what goes on, we try to vary it--some demonstrations by...
