Do You Remember Your First CD Player? An NAD 502(?) in 1985. Reasonably mediocre, but more listenable than most available at the time. I agree with Art Dudley, there are no classic early CD players.
What steps forward were actually steps backward? I agree with Drubin, Johnnantais's post is excellent, as is Mattybumpkin's. I've never been bothered by an upgrade to my system where I've had the piece in my system for an extended audition, which is almost all pieces these days (even my upgrade ...
Changing EL-34's to 6550 or Kt-88's I agree with Elevick. My Jadis JA80s are auto-biasing and can accept all of the tubes you mention, but not all amps can do the same; I don't think the CJs you have can take other types of tubes, but they can give you the answer better than I.
Speakers Corner QC? Doug, don't blame Speakers Corner for what DG did at the recording stage! I have had no real problems with any of the 30-40 Speakers Corner LPs I've bought; sounds like bad luck on your part.
Jadis Defy 7: need advice I think, other than relying on your seller's honesty, you could get the serial number and ask Jadis via their European website, they take a little while but generally will respond to an inquiry like that. Avguygeorge is right about servicing, alth...
Jadis Defy 7: need advice I'll try to help a little, although I never have owned the Defy 7 (heard a few marks of it often, particularly the original). 1 and 2. The earliest versions of these amps were fairly "ripe" in the bass--i.e., they had lots of mid bass, and sound l...
Krell KSA 200B and Musical fidelity F22???? You probably should ask Krell some of these questions. Generally, I had no problem when I used my Krell KSA 80 (the smaller stablemate of the 200) with an Audio Research SP11 Mk II hybrid preamp. As far as maintenance, you could get the serial num...
Chesky classical LP's Rushton's right about the Speakers Corner reissues; their Decca remasters are uniformly terrific, and the Mercury (Paul Paray conducting the Detroit in works of Ravel and Debussy) I just got is superb, albeit with a little loose deep bass and some...
Tonearm cable recommendations I find the Graham IC-70 to be excellent (I use a DIN to RCA; I'd suggest you use the same, rather than a junction box, if you can). The old IC-30 was good but is likely to be bettered by many of the newer designs.
Tweeters facing in or out ? In my view, it's what the manufacturer says it should be--that's the person who designed the thing, he/she knows best.
Chesky classical LP's I will refrain from commenting on the MFSL classical offerings, except to note that I think they did some manipulation to the frequency response in their remastering. As far as the Chesky/Classic/Speakers Corner/Testament reissues vs. originals, t...
Chesky classical LP's The Brahms/Beethoven is very good; I think the Freccia may have been one of their early ones (The Pines of Rome definitely was one of the criticized ones), but hey, for $7.50, it's worth the "gamble"! Besides, I always felt there was some snobbism...
Chesky classical LP's They are quite good, particularly after the first few they came out with, which were somewhat criticized; at the price being asked they are a bargain. Their remakes of the Shaded Dogs such as Lt. Kije offer quite a contrast from the Classic reissu...
Mom and pop garage audiophile caliber gear To some extent, Audible Illusions (their preamps) and Quicksilver (pre- and power amps) are underrated and underpublicized but offer tremendous performance for your money.
Scott Nixon outboard DAC's, any good? Scott Nixon was the Analogic Design Group/Anadyne in the 80s and 90s and consistently made excellent-sounding tubed CDPs and DACs. He knows what he's doing and does it well. You should check the AA archives, there's a lot of posts about his work. |
