Harbeth HL5 vs Magnepan 1.6qr Who wins??
Develyn50, have you heard either? How did you come to these two for comparison?
Harbeth HL5 vs Magnepan 1.6qr Who wins??
Seems like a really tough question to answer. They really are very different.
Great old speakers that are as good as new ones
Dunlavy's in general would proabably hold up well compared with a lot being sold today.
Merlin VSM
I have my Merlins in the same size room. I have tried many speakers and for my taste they are among the best speakers made, period. I listen mainly to jazz and acoustic folk/rock and the bass seems plenty deep for me. For full Symphonic they can't...
Impossible? Small towers, efficient, musical, loud
Merlin VSM should do it, and are among the best speakers made, if you don't neet the lowest octave, down to 30hz or so they are world-class.
best Integrated amp under 4000$
VAC Avatar or Mac 2275. If the Totems are tough on tubes, I would look into the Pass Integrated.
Pass X 150 and X150.5 differences please.
I think you will consistently get similar replies. The .5 sound better to most people for the reasons stated above.
Speakers and vacuum tube gear
Merlin VSMs are about as tube friendly as they come. Basically a smooth impedance curve and highish (8 ohm or more)will make most speakers tube friendly.
EL34 differences in air & stage depth?
RAM Labs (Roger Modjeski) sells Siemens EL34s as well. Use them in my Music Reference RM9SE.
grilles on or off the speakers??
Are Stereophile speaker measurements done with grills on or off? Do they say?
Amplifier question for powering Wilson Sophia
Agree with Sbank, all your choices are good, and it really is personal taste, and totally agree you should throw Ayre into the mix. But, I would still go with tubes if it were my decision, unless SS is a necessity for your situation.
Audio Research Reference 5 Preamp
I've hard "negative" comments about 6H30, many folks thinking that is where ARC went wrong, right after your LS-25MKI. So I wonder if the "improved" implementation of 6H30 is starting to sound as good as the great 6922 preamps, but maybe with some...
Audio Research Reference 5 Preamp
What doe ARC know now that they did not know then to make the Ref 5 a marked improvement of the Ref 3? Is it improved capacitors and resistors or power supplies? A totally different circuit design that was not conceivable then? I would have though...
Will Old MAC outperform Cambridge 640 Azur V2?
Like Pescolar says, it doesn't feel the same to own a Cambridge, and that counts for something over time.
Music Reference RM 200 vs. Mcintosh 275 amp
I have owned an RM10, RM9 and RM9 SE and I would say Roger consistently makes some of finest sounding and most reliable amplifiers on the market. He is a pleasure to deal with, but it is true that he is basically a one-man (or two) operation and d...
