How good is the EAR 834 L preamp? Doesn't sound like my cup of tea. I owned CAT, LAMM, Joule, and am looking for a tube preamp that can better my BENT TAP. But I'm not sure there is such a thing, at least not matched to my Music Reference RM 9 Special Edition. If build quality is ...
dumb question about gain and preamps Is it possible to have gain without distortion to the signal, asked another way, is a preamp without gain less distorted assuming similar quality attentuators? Or asked another way, can active amp be more accurate than a passive assuming to impeda...
SET vs OTL Are OTLs more accurate to the source? More linear across the frequency spectrum?
All vandersteen users ? Two good speakers. I don't think it will be easy for someone to tell you which to choose, but have to agree with Unsound that you should choose your speakers first and then decide on the amps. The speaker truly defines the type of sound you will g...
How good is the EAR 834 L preamp? Are their any owners of this preamp out there that have settled with it after owner some of the higher price stuff. This preamp intrigues me becuase it is relatively inexpensive and TdPs reputation is stellar, I jsut wonder if he is able to put ou...
Quicksilver amp owners You might want to try the NOS Siemens EL34s from RAM Labs. They are much better than current production according to most listeners. They are also very long lasting. I use them in my RM9 SE amp and preferred them to the KT88 Reissues with my speak...
Advice on speakers? Vandersteen 3A Signature. Very full range at the price point.
Looking for a great el34 based amp McGarick, I don't think QS is underrated by many who have owned them. You'll find many folks owning them for years and possibly "upgrading" to their newer or more powerful products. Glad you like it, they should last you a long time too.
Bass, more or less? I understand Serblin's comment. It is why after trying all sorts of speakers I settled on Merlin VSM-MXe. The speaker is balanced with the right amount of bass for my ears in my 13x18 room with bass traps and room treatment. I've had that feeling ...
NeoAudiophilite need advice:active vs passive Cory, I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Add volume and depth compared to what. Are you asking if it will play loud enough? As for depth, you might percieve more depth in a recording because passives reveal lots of details and "depth" ...
Atma-Sphere S-30 MK3 Update..... Ralph, I am under the impression that the output tubes are not matched to each other. How does that work? Why is it not necessary to match the tubes the way it is with other amps? Maybe I have been misinformed.
Autoformer versus Transformer Passives? I asked John Chapman (BENT) about the ground-induced hum before I chose the autoformer over the transformer (he had a few S&B still available)and he said that in most cases that should not be a problem - I hear no hum so I imagine I'm safe on ...
ARC with CJ? Why would you want seems like a good question. Not that it is a bad match, but it seems to be a combo that few would pursue.
CAT Legend vs WAVAC PR-T1 ? Can't argue with what someone hears, but the Bent TAP-X is certainly not lacking dynamics or body. Could be system matching, but in the right system, the passive approach is certainly a viable alternative to an tube preamp I have owned.
When do you know when your tubes are going bad Call Roger. No? |
