The Harbeth phenomenon How would you describe the differences between the M30s and HL5s? I did here the M40s, and at least in that room with Mac gear, it just seemed like too much bass, they might have needed a bigger room to be balanced. Another think I have noticed is...
Atma Sphere deserves praise I agree. Which is one reason I own Atma-sphere and Merlin, and Joule. There is something to be said for 15-20 year old designs that were so well executed the first time, that it is not necessary to reinvent the product every 3 years with no upgrad...
Atma-Sphere MA2 Mk2.3 / Krell KSA 250 / Passlabs? I use the same ICs, a bit cheaper than the Cardas I use with my other amps:) One really should take that into account with thinking about the price of the Atma-sphere gear. Rushton, I agree with you, I've not hear a better amp with my Merlins (ver...
Footers? I chose the E-A-R. The fella there was a bit suspect about hearing differences between the different interfaces and he felt the Cork could go brittle over time, and the Sorbathane tended to capture grit and grain - so I went with the E-A-R. I thin...
Atma-Sphere MA2 Mk2.3 / Krell KSA 250 / Passlabs? Ralph, that is good point made some time ago, it really isn't about being OTL friendly, but tube friendly - pretty much the same requirements. I get that now.
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states No doubt the M60s are quality watts:)
Amplifier progression and change OP, what are you thinking?
Amplifier progression and change I agree, I think you would need 60 - 80 watts to drive those speakers with some margin for different rooms and listening levels. Maybe something like the MAC 2275 or a used VAC Avatar with KT88s. Some say the Cayins are good, but I have not heard ...
Footers? They do what they are meant to do, beautifully made, and only $18-20 (1 lb) with four choices of interface material - cork, sorbathane, E-A-R rubber, and felt. He has 1 lb, 2 lb, and 5 lb versions. Simply made, no BS.
Footers? Those EdenSound brass weights with the EAR padding work very nicely - and a bargain to boot.
Amplifier progression and change I think you can get a heck of a good integrated for your price range, in the $3000 range, I think the Manley Stingray II is well worth looing into. They use EL84 tubes which I really like in one on my amps, and if the triode setting is enough powe...
Amplifier progression and change How much power is recommended for the Harbeth's
Amplifier progression and change I think 35 year old amps with replaced capacitors, etc can be every bit as good as "modern" gear, but I do think a move to tubes would be an improvement, even if your amps were 2 years old. That being said, if you want to keep the simplicity of SS...
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states Always thought the Acoustats were designed around the "current" paradigm. I would be surprised if the M60s would do it, Zeros or not. Always seemed like SS was the way to go with that speaker, but....
Footers? Thanks. I use BDR and Pits below Mapleblocks for my amps sitting on the floor, with Herbie Isopods[?] between the maple and the amp - that seems to work well. The Ginko design does seem to make a lot of sense - it sure does invite DIY at the price... |
