Slagle AVC Modules & Lightspeed Attenuator Anthony, any word from George on expected lifespan of the LED and LDRs?
Atma-sphere 3.0 to 3.1 Ralph, does that mean it is best to have a source with lower gain so that you can turn the passive up further (less attentuation) - as long as it plays loud enough? By the way, how much does it cost to "upgrade" a pair of M60s with volume controls...
Focal Mini Utopia vs Merlin MXe I think the balanced connection is of very minimal, if any benefit, and I don't think you can get an AVC that is balanced - though it can be built at much greater expense. So far, my test have told me that AVC is better than TVC, that is I think t...
Atma-sphere 3.0 to 3.1 I have not, but I have been listening to passives and they are great with the right amp. I think the Atma-spheres are not ideal for an external passive, but I suspect that with Ralph building it into the unit customized for the specific load and s...
Focal Mini Utopia vs Merlin MXe I'm still waiting for them. I'm thinking 6-8 weeks more.
Focal Mini Utopia vs Merlin MXe Love Bent-TAP, but not with Atma-sphere, the amp is not sensitive enough for a passive IMHO. What does work really well is a passive with the Music Reference RM10MKII ($1950 new, to $1,000 used). I had CAT JL2, Ars Sonum, Quicksilver, Music Refere...
I think I've made up my mind John, that would cause a high frequency roll-off, no? I'm not sure if that is what is meant here by dull, but the Ref 3 certainly sounded dynamic as heck, but that was into a 100kohm load, I think Pass amps need SS preamps or tube pre with 500ohm ...
Atma Sphere S30 amp Dpe, I think all the amps under consideration are going to be good. What did the Ars do that wasn't your cup of tea? By the way the Music Reference gear, both RM10 and 9 is neutral, even though the RM9 uses EL34s. I have all three, Atma and the tw...
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states Is there such a thing? Seems like SS can drive anything, it just won't sound as good as tubes with speakers that can be driven effectively by tubes.
Atma Sphere S30 amp Maybe, but the M60s are better yet. I've not yet heard an amp that sounds better with the VSMs, and I've been trying a lot of them.
Who is using passive preamps and why? PhD, for some reason, George sold it to me for $415, but you do have to buy a 12DVC 400mA AC/DC adapter, which seem to only be available in Canada, ended costing $30 for the unit plus shipping.
Who is using passive preamps and why? I know this whole issue is a matter of taste, and will never be resolved, but I will say this for the passive argument. I had this long discussion with Roger Modjeski of Music Reference and RAM Labs - that is, a fella known as one our our great de...
I think I've made up my mind Tomorrow might be a good day to buy a used Ref3:)
Atma Sphere S30 amp Very close to the RM9 Special Edition that costs $9,500 - just a little less sense of scale, to expected with its 162 watts, but they are certainly cut from the same cloth. Now if I were choosing an amp for the VSMs and could only have one, it wou...
Atma Sphere S30 amp The RM10 will never break and it will give you 10,000 hours of tube life. Try it, if you don't like it will take you 4-5 hours to sell back on Audiogon. $20K is an awful lot of music:) |
