Pass Labs XA30.5 and ModWright KWA150
A Pass amp that works a bit more like a tube amp, especially in terms of damping AND being a very easy load for the tube preamp would be the First Watt Aleph J if you can find one used. I think it works extremely well with smooth and highish imped...
Question for Merlin VSM/ARS Sonum owners
Thuan98, you have a great system, it is time to enjoy.
Merlin vsm mme owners, Cardas cabling Question.
9rw, I have used CAT, Pass, Quicksilver, Lamm, ARC, Placette, and a few other pre/amp combos with the Merlins. The reason I have what I have is they work well with the Merlins, that being said OTLs will work incredibly well with any speaker that i...
Question for Merlin VSM/ARS Sonum owners
Well, you do have a preamp/amp combo selling for a bit over 3x the price versus a small, lower powered integrated "voiced" for the speaker, seems like a fair fight to me. Should not be too shocking you might prefer a $12,000+ combo (and Dennis Had...

Ral, what does "tube-like" mean to you?
Merlin vsm mme owners, Cardas cabling Question.
9rw, you are right the John Dunlavy knew ALOT about speaker design and some really love his speakers. He also basically said that those that can here differences between speaker cables are hallucinating (other than the impact of guage). That essay...

Low maintenance.
Slagle AVC Modules & Lightspeed Attenuator
It would be nice to get Terry's views on the LA as he has owned the Placette and Bent, and his current tube preamp, based on the review is very good indeed. There is something about the idea of a passive linestage that makes me think it has to be ...
Review: Concert Fidelity CF-080 Preamplifier
Thanks. I will give him a call, I'm rolling the Atma-sphere pre.
Slagle AVC Modules & Lightspeed Attenuator
Can we agree that with the right combination between source amp an ICs, that no buffering is needed, and if not needed for impedance matching no buffer is better than having one. In other words, no buffer is optimal, but a buffer is much more flex...

Terry, were did you buy the Mullard 12au7s?
Slagle AVC Modules & Lightspeed Attenuator
It would be great to hear a comparsion of the LA up against the likes of the Concert Fidelity. Congrats on the XA.5s, I regret having sold my 30.5s, but 4 amps was getting a little ridiculous:)
what percentage of us really knows sound
Like Rhjazz says, the Merlin really isn't a BASS lovers speaker, though it is +/-2db 33hz-22khz, not world class bass depth, but not too shabby either and too me it sounds pretty darn realistic handling acoustic bass on jazz recordings. But true, ...

That JGI story is really weird, isn't it?
Harbeth HL5 vs M30
Mike, that really is a matter is system integration, but bright electronics will sound bright on Merlins, they play what is fed them, I've never heard them sound bright with tube equipment. That is the plus and minus of highly resolving gear, no p...
