Could the transformer be eliminated?
The Acoustat amps used a high-voltage pentode tube, I forget the exact number... I used to own a pair of highly modified Acoustat Servo-Charge amps that used 6LB6 high-voltage transmitter tubes, and they worked really well. As I recall, those amps...
Slow left channel start up
Either it's revolting, because it's jealous of the right channel, or it's just plain lazy...If it sounds okay once it's "charged up," then why should a small time delay matter?
OK, I said it...
Your results seem quite believeable for what you have done. Analog isn't perfect, and neither is digital. Get used to it! I agree with the former poster who said that a phono-stage upgrade would make an appreciable difference. It did for me. BTW, ...
Turntable adjustment question
It's also possible that one channel of the cartridge has slightly more output than the other. If you try everything that TWL has suggested and you still have the problem then a channel imbalance in the cartridge is quite possible. The solution, of ...
can both balanced and unbalanced be used a once?
A lot of preamps with both balanced and unbalanced outputs can drive both at the same time. I doubt that you'd hurt the unit by trying it. That said, the two different amps could have different input loading and sensitivity specs, which could lead...
Speakers for Classical and Rock in large space.
Wow, a 36'x39'room with a 20' high ceiling -- that's what I call a BIG listening room; actually more like a theater or auditorium. I think Duke is right about it being hard to accomplish your goals on your budget. But a few things popped into my he...
bass traps installed...it's worth the effort
Hey Snick,No problem -- it's better to be busy than not busy and in business you have to rake it in while the raking is good. Give me a shout when you have time to breathe. And if you have any bass traps left over, put them aside for me would you?...
bass traps installed...it's worth the effort
It's surprising that the response changed so much (from 63Hz-200Hz) with the addition of the traps (at least to me). It looks like the traps are "tuned" for that bandwidth...Good work!
OK to play 78s with elliptical stylus?
Sounds right, Eldartford. I have an old Dynaco equalizer that I may press into service for that purpose.
OK to play 78s with elliptical stylus?
Oh boy, EQ too?! You mean there's some special equalization for 78s and a standard phono stage cannot be used with good results?
OK to play 78s with elliptical stylus?
Shhhhhhsh, Eldartford, if the high-end companies get wind of this they will start making needles out of cocobolo and charging a couple of hundred dollars a pop for them. That's a cool story! :)When I was a kid I think we had some kind of cheap car...
OK to play 78s with elliptical stylus?
Doing a little more research, I see that I can get a Shure M78S for around $60 and I think that Grado might make a Prestige model with a 78 stylus for around the same price. I'm not sure if I want to spring for that since I only paid $30 for the t...
OK to play 78s with elliptical stylus?
Thanks Eldartford, you are right. I found the following post: "What is the difference between LP and 78 needles? The difference is size. the 78 stylus is 4 times larger than the LP stylus. This is because the groove dimensions of the 78 disc are la...
goodbye to vinyl. . . . grr ------ longish rant
Inna, I think you have to go back and reread the original post. Lazarus says that his analog does outperform his digital -- just not by the degree he thinks it should for the dollar difference he has invested. He makes a valid point and sometimes ...
goodbye to vinyl. . . . grr ------ longish rant
Lazarus,A week or so ago I made a post called "Rediscovering the Joy of Digital?". It was along the same lines as your post, although I was only half serious and it appears that you are quite serious. All things considered, I can't say I blame you....
