Any one try pa amplifiers for home stereo?
In the 70's i used some crown gear for my home system and it sounded pretty good...not high end but not high end priced and it always worked. Some of the new crown amps are great, as are the QSC. They are never going to rival a good tube amp but i...
Tube gear under $2k?
oops, the integrated is the it85, the 150 is a stereo power amp that would require a pre....more money. All the comments remain valid though
Tube gear under $2k?
for the money you could get a vtl 150 integrated with remote. I have to agree with Tbrros to the extent that you may not attain your goals within your budget. nice highs and mids would be no problem for a $2k tube (or ss) setup; your jazz, folk, a...
Alternatives to Dunlavy SC-IVA???
seems to me now is the time to buy a pair of IVa's. Since the shop went south some of the Dunlavy the prices i've seen on this site have gone to silly cheap levels. Bad business practices don't change the quality of a speaker but some folks seem t...
How do you troubleshoot a pair of Aerial 10Ts?
the 10Ts need a high current amp to make them work. I have VTL 185 monoblocks and aerial said they were the minimal requirement to make the 10Ts work. Fiddle with speaker placement as well as they appear to be pretty sensitive to that. I didn't bu...
What is best tube mono's for Dunlavy SC III's?
i would either a) look at the tubes in the 450's or search for some other problem, i.e. cables,or they may have been in triode which softens them up some or b) go solid state cause you really ain't a tube guy. I use VTL 185s sigs with my athenas a...
DIY Record Shelves?
I made a version of the Flexi equipment rack for my albums as well. 3/4 in threaded rod (3 legs but you can go with 4) with mdf shelves and nuts/washers to adjust shelves. Top and bottom just slide over the rods. I added end blocks to the shelves ...
Records are better. I actually heard it
My CD player is fairly nice (ARC CD_2)and my phono section is pretty low end (CJ walker table, linn arm and cart, B&O phono stage). both run through VTL. For convenience, ease of finding new material, and not having to tippy toe around the roo...

VTL, ARC and the 6550C
I had the same conclusion about the arc vt100 that you had. I found CJ to be too warm though. i ended up with a pair of vtl 185s to drive dunlavy athenas and they do great even in triode. They will smoke the st150, nothing against that amp either....
C-J Premier 12's vs. ARC VT100 MKII--advice?
I'm with Brulee on the CJs being too colored. In my amp search i listened to the 12s, the vt100, a pass 60 watter (forgot the number) an wound up with vtl 185's. A used pair of 185s should be in the $3k to $3.5k range. The VTLs are a tad warmer th...
Earplugs for conerts?
I know what you are talking about JCdem and the plugs you are asking about are a lot different than the suggestions put forth above. The ones i've heard about range from ones that are custom fit to your ears to ones that are generic fit for a lot ...
What Speaker are Great for Rock and Roll $5K-20K
I agree with Phase Correct about the recording of rock. I have Dunlavy athenas fed by VTL at home and i have to admit a lot of my rock cds sound a lot better in the car. You might want to look at EV pro gear. Tons of thump, decent transparency whe...
Hendrix blues
Just noticed all the Buddy Guy Hendrix refs above. Check out Jimmy Thackery. I've seen him do the Hendrix thing live and it was amazing. WHen Thackery is on he cooks ole Buddy
Hendrix blues
There is actually a CD out by the name of Hendrix Blues, don't remember the lable right off. Just took it with me on a road trip and it's a pretty kool disc. I also have a cassette i got a loooong time ago that has over 45 minutes of different liv...
