$25k vs $200k
no comment on the singer folks but on the base question raised by the title: I have a system at about $25k retail that IMO smoked the local high end shops $90k ref system. Maybe their system produced a bit more detial but for pure listening enjoym...
VTL Tetrode/Triode
horsepower wars in sound reproduction, man how reality changes. I remember in the early 80's when i played in a loud rock band (we're talking marshall half stacks running 3/4 by the end of the night)and all we had driving the vocal mains was a low...
tube amp shoot-out
I'm using VTL 185s and they give me everything i'm looking for. The VTL sig series starts with the 185s and i'm pretty sure the power supply is stouter than the 125s and of a higher quality design.A word about "tube glare" The manleys may be just ...
Transparent's Network Boxes
dave which cable provided the grills? in other words i hear a distint difference in the top end of my my system without grills.
ARC vs Atma-Sphere and ARC vs VTL Amplifiers
I think the VTL are a bit warmer than the ARC and maybe a little more open on top. MB185 vrs a vt100. You also have the triode/tetrode switching with the VTL which is not available, to my knowledge, with the ARC. Triode opens a whole nother can of...
Todd Rundgren and the Liars tour / New album
I'm about 50/50 on the album. some of it is incredibly good and some less so. i saw the first 2 shows of the tour and it showed that even great bands are composed of humans. After only a weeks worth of practice they proceeded to go out and cut mor...
Best Bike to ride before a good listening session
merlin ultralight with campy chorus and easton carbon is my new found love. You have to try the overpriced easton mag stems...with the carbon bars there is nothing smoother. still revert to my old torture geometry bianchi every now and then.
General question about speaker impedance and amps
audiopile had some real good points, especially about the class A amps. I have a little 45 watt guitar that indeed walks all over larger A/B amps and is suitable for cooking food with. Ditto for the sound improvement over time though i switch from...
Low watt system for rock,electronica?
I offer a second vote for Klipsh, older cornwalls would do quite nicely. the 15 can generate huge bass and they are efficient as all get out.
price points vs. room treatment
I didn't see your comment as a put down but rather as suggesting that high end gear may not be worth considering when that gear may still gain you benifits...though in no way the benifits that would be gained in a nicely appointed room...and still...
price points vs. room treatment
newbee, you are correct in pointing out that sans treatment you 'll never get the most out of your rig. However, my room is in dire need of treatment, and some areas just ain't gonna get it for money or WAF reasons, but my quality rig still sounds...
Question for Dunlavy ScIII users
Pass labs indeed sound nice with the dunlavies but IMO ARC or VTL, tubes take them to an entirely differnt levelin the midrange and top end openness. I agree with the above posters that they don't need a lot of power but more is definitely better.
What am I to do about
maybe your new speakers are just picking up high end noise your old ones didn't get. I have a pair of HT pro silway II cables that used to really open up the highs and tighten up the bass when linked between my cdp and pre-amp. The problem was a n...
Drums reproduction
depends on the sound guy for the live shows just like the producer. New school mixers go for the big thump and overbaring bass while the old school guys leave the bass and drums as a solid bottom but not in the way of the soloists. The latter is b...
Are the performance of separates worth the price?
the integrateds get rid of the cost and sonic influence of interconnects so there is a big gain there. The integrates do tend to be on the low end of the power spectrum and tend to not be high current amps from what i've experienced. that can pres...
