Tube reliability in amps
Ive been using a pair of VTL monos that have easily adjustable bias (about 30 min 2x per year and it could be done a lot quicker but i'm kind of a-r about it). Warm-up time is usually about 30-45 minutes before they start sounding real good, they ...
The best POT you ever had
Ah the memories, the 70's were great and what a tweek...even my midfi crown/klipsh system sounded like like like woww man
what made you get up & dance during the Olympics
knowing they were finally over and Law and Order would be back on on Wed
Is there any such thing as a high end receiver?
I vote heavily in favor of the old Marantz. I sold an early 70's version of a 2275 to my brother about 20 yrs ago and it still sounds great and seems to have tons more power than the rated 75 watts. Good tuner section to boot
Average age of audiophiles
I started building my first good system at about 15 and continued to upgrade the system and my guitar collection until grad school captured my attention. Got out of grad school and motorcycle drag racing captured my wallet (you want to talk about ...
Safe audiogon transactions; lowering the bar.
As an additional comment on who is the owner during shipping. While Fed Ex and UPS may consider the piece yours once you pick it up, un-inspected of course, if there is anything wrong with it due, to their always delicate handling, they will settl...
CJ Walker..upgrade or not?
Hi Doug, The comment about the arm was actually a mental cross-up with some info i found about the Linn arm on audio asylum. Every reference to it says eventually it will fall apart. I think i will try the deck upgrades you suggest anyway because ...
Tube Preamp Advice Needed
I would suggest making sure your speakers are well away from the side walls (shouldn't be a problem with your room) so the reflected sound shows up at the listening location with sufficient time delay to avoid smearing of the highs. I have avoided...
CJ Walker..upgrade or not?
Thanks for the input Doug. At first the mods sounded like a ton of work but the more i think about it they seem pretty do-able. GIven the need to add in a new arm, however, suggests that it may be better to just look for a killer deal on a table s...
Experiences, good and bad, with VTL
I never want to hear a system like that Albert, 'cause i have a feeling it would be an incredibly impossible-to-pay-for act to follow. I have a pair of lowly VTL MB185 and I'm extreamly happy with them. Last year they survived a near lightning hit...
switching from Tubes to SS
While auditioning speakers i used a 60 watt Pass labs aleph amp (don't remember the number) and an ARC VT100 mk II tube amp. The pass sounded good but didn't have the air or refinement on top that the tube amp had. The difference in bass handling ...
Transparent Audio IC's and Speaker Cable
Hey Gil, I also have GAS (guitar aquisition syndrom)and the desire for a killer rig. A: get the taylor first. B: listen to it a lot C: listen to your transparent cables. By the time you get through C i bet the transparent are up for sale. I compar...
Tubed Amp Troubleshooting
It seems odd that the amp would have a drop out in a specific frequency range since it just takes the signal and amplifies it. Your bad tube guess would suggest you don't have the power to drive the bass. I would expect this to occurr from the get...
Best tube pre-amp with remote vol. control
I have a VTL 5.5 signiture with remote that i find to be very open and neutral in my system. I haven't tried the optional phono section yet. I can't see any reason to change. The CJ gear was too warm for me.
High End Components - How long do they last?
The holy grail of guitar amplifiers, to a lot of folks, is a '59 bassman. Probably have to do a cap replacement once in a while but there aint no reason for em to ever die if the design is sound.
