Long wall vs, short wall
Long wall placement is the only way to go. Tried mine both ways and the openness the Dunlavy's achieve so well just doesn't come across on the short wall (unless it's huge) i would say you need at least 3 to 4 ft between the wall and the speakers ...
Busted Phillips Screws
take a small file or dremel and cut a straight cut into the screw then use a straight blade screw driver. go slow with the extraction. the power driver isn't always a good tool
My new dedicated room sound like crap, please help.
As Sean indicated your room is dangerously close to square. I would start with corner bass traps to get control of the peaks and valleys in the bass waves and because all sound waves tend to pile up in the corners. with the smaller room your first...
Dunlavy SC-IV vs. Aerial 10T characteristics
the alethas were also pretty pricy to build and apparently the new corporate structure is more driven by the love of money than by JD's quest for the coolest speakers (ever see that huge bow-tie-on-it's-side creation he came up with. now that's WA...
Experience with Chang Lightspeed Conditioners?
i use a 9600 on my front end gear with my amps right into the wall. THe chang provided noticable sound improvements and when a near lightning hit fried tubes and fuses in my amps the front end stuff was untouched. Didn't hurt the chang either. wor...
Dunlavy SC-IV vs. Aerial 10T characteristics
i compared the Dunlavy SC III and the athenas against the 10Ts and went with the Athenas. I listented to the IV but not a lot. The fact that the SCIIIs had some advantages over the 10Ts is what sent me listening to the larger Dunlavys. For almost ...
CAN Bi-Amping been done Correctly?
I work with pro sound reinforcement a lot and multi amping is a way of life. Use a big solid amp for the bottom and you can get away with a smaller amp for the highs and mids because the big power suck is the bass. I don't know why you would need ...
Harmonic Technology Pro-9 Plus & Pro-Silway MkII
Pro 9's: very neutral no cable type of cable. Pro silway II. Very open sounding with a lot of air around instruments. Tight bass but not real full compared to the truth links. There is also a hole in the midrange that takes away from some of the w...

Sideways in Paridise, John Mooney and Jimmy Thackery doing an acoustic thing. Recorded live outdoors in Jamaca...tree frogs doing the background thing. way cool mix of delta blues with a new orleans groove. Rye Cooder (i think i killed the spellin...
What is vibration isolation for?
for a cheap experiment put some bubble wrap uner your CD player. With my ACR CD-2 there was a significant change. the sound tightened up and became quite dry. I didn't like it as much as the feet on the stand but the point is the difference is ver...
Reproduction of acoustic instruments with tube amp
Dburdick, i don't know if the ST 85 can operate in Triode mode but i'm using VTL 185 monos with the 5.5 sig preamp and in triode small scale acoustic music is pretty much like being in the room with the musicians. seperation and definition is not ...
Why Expensive power Cables when Romex behind Wall?
I once read an article about using home electrical wires for networking all the computers/control devices in a home togeather. The article went into all the well known sources for noise on the power lines and how the carrier waves were tuned to th...
Which Of The Following CD Players Are The Warmest?
I have an ARC CD-2 that sounds great that i bought for right at $1800. Probably would go for less now that the CD-3 is out. Definitely warmer than the Wadia. I really wanted a wadia 860 but couldn't swing the cash so i settleed for the ARC. The AR...
newbie need help on decision on buying an amp
i used a small 20-30 watt amp with a pair of Vandersteen 1-b's and it sounded pretty good at low volumes. Then one day i had it cranked...sounded great. Then the amp clipped and it sounded expensive. get a bigger amp
Do power cords really matter?
I recently read an article in Scientific American about using house electrical wiring to carry computer networking (i.e. internet) signals. I don't remember the details but the engineers were using higher frequencies carrier signals to avoid the n...
