Best blues today
Tinsley Ellis overall will knock your socks off every time..great voice, playing and song writing. Duke Robillard is the jump blues and swing king. Curtis Salgado is the most soulfull singer i've seen in years and is a hell of a harp layer to boot...
So you're an audiophile - are you also a musician?
been a guitar player and song writer for 30 some years. Played hard rock in the 70's, alternative in the 80s and after moving to New Orleans in the the 80's and Austin Tx in 90 turned into a blues player...go figure. Played professionally on and o...
Box speakers that sound like Electrostats?
dunlavy athenas. aplace them right and the imaging is wonderful, incredible openness, very good if not great bass. Elestrostatics may still have a slight edge on microdynamics but for overall balance i've found nirvana
Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive?
2 wheels, currently a 99 Kawi Nomad and 2002 kawi zzr-1200, 79 suzuki 1000. I have owned more than a few others over the years, all nice and most very fast. 4 wheels. wife has a camery i have a 84 nissan pickup that is totaly rusted out and near d...
Vandersteen or Klipsch
Night and day my friend. The 1-cs are going to be a lot more laid back than the Klipsh, more natural but with less bass, very open sounding non-box speaker that provide quite a lot of detail. If you take the time to set them up the soundstage is v...
long i/c run...looking for high end cable
I'm using 22 ft long Harmonic Tech Truth Links unbalanced. Not a real expensive cable to be sure but they sound better in my system than some much more expensive cables i've tried. I have had no noticible increase in noise floor since i went from ...
Opinions on VTL preamps
I have a 5.5 with a pair of 185 monos. No problem with the pre but have an intermittant hum with one of the amps. it is probably a ground problem because it goes away as soon as the power switch is moved. it is't bad enough to fix and hasn't gotte...
Alternatives to Dunlavy speakers?
i need to cast my vote both with Brauser and with Karl. I used to be a Vandy guy until i found the Dunlavy's the Athenas were so much more open sounding than the sig 3s. I thought the thiels were a bit bright. that said i also thought the dunlavy ...
Any opinions on VTL mono-blocs MB450, etc ?
from my auditioning the CJ are a lot more tubey than ACR or VTL. As mentioned above the triode mode in the VTL is killer in small group stuff, acoustic music and vocals especially. ARC doesn't have that option. If you want a bit more thump then fl...
Attention: Dunlavy Audio Labs out of business
resale should not be an issue LPgal. If you did your homework and really liked the speakers before you bought them i really doubt you will find anything to replace them with because the dunlavys have an open sound that i haven't heard in other spe...
Attention: Dunlavy Audio Labs out of business
when the new owners killed the athenas because they" didn't fit the product line" (per their email responce to a question) i sensed trouble. killing probably their best mass apeal speaker on looks...dumb! I listented to a lot of speakers before i ...
amps for dunlavy sc4
i've auditioned them with pass and arc and have them at home with VTL 185s. Like stated above the bass is a little better with the solid state but the mids and highs sound so good with tubes it was a no brainer to me. the VTL do a good job with th...
Audio Research CD2 randomly skips
had my cd-2 for about 3 yrs and have had minimal skipping problems (like less than 5 times over the whole time) not recognizing a disc is a lot more frequent but usually reinserting a time or two gets the dis played. I really wanted a Wadia 860 bu...
