How to ship BIG equipment at moderate cost?
I second (or third) the BAX Global recommendation, but the above is true...they don't pick up from residential addresses anymore...only commercial.
where to be various brands of tubes
Try Andy at Vintage Tube Services. (www.vintagetubeservices.com)
Which of these would you choose for your system
I haven't heard the Silverline or Talon, but my Merlin VSM-M's work well near the back wall (though I usually try to keep them about 5 feet out). There is a slight increase in bass energy and the soundstage depth suffers some(as expected), but the...
What companies have gone above and beyond?
I've experienced great service from Pass Labs, Mike Elliott at Alta Vista Audio (Counterpoint mods/repairs), Bobby Palkovic at Merlin, and Ric Schultz at EVS.
Which speakers work close to back wall?
Come to think of it...my Merlin VSM-M's are front-ported and also work well near the rear wall. I normally keep them about 5' out, but occasionally push them back to 18"-24" when guests stay over. The bass does increase some and there is some loss...
Which speakers work close to back wall?
I haven't kept up on their current models in that price range, but Mission speakers always worked well near the back wall. They actually recommended 8" on my old Mission 752's and 753's, 751's, etc.
Help with phono pre-amp
You should do a search on this topic because it's been covered many times before...you'd find a million more suggestions in every price range . Depending on what you mean by "minimal amount of money"...you could buy a used Lehman Black Cube for $3...
Power Cable recipes? Do you have a good one?
Hi Nrchy...I'm not sure if you're familiar with the "Bob Crump" power cord recipe or not, but you can easily find it by doing a search on AudioAsylum. Many people seem to think it's pretty good (I've never heard one).
Cary 306/100 demo/cheap or 306/200 or 303/200 new?
I've seen used 306/200 models listed here for $3100-$3300, which is probably about $400-$600 more than a new 303/200 (I think those are often discounted to $2700 or so)...that might be the way to go.
First Look - In DashTube Car Audio
It looks like it's a Panasonic, so I'm guessing that it's a hybrid and that tube that you see is it. That's not too shabby though...I had a Luxman integrated amp with one tube in it and it did change the sound for the better. How did they manage t...
Best used DAC 500 or less, need help
Tim is right...the Millenium DAC 2 uses Ric's own output stage...no cheap op amps. It does use the Crystal Upsampling chip which must reduce jitter, because I'm using mine with a Studer CDP from the late 80s and it sounds amazing. I also second hi...
Cary CD-301 vs Jolida JD100 ??
Hi Stenersr...I'm pretty sure the tube circuit is in the analog output stage of those CDPs. If you use them as a transport only, you will bypass that stage...making them the same as any other transport. Many tube CDPs will probably provide that so...
Best used DAC 500 or less, need help
A used EVS Millenium DAC would be in that range (if you can find one).
help with humming noise?
I'm not familiar with either component, but you might have a ground loop between them. Try floating the ground (using a cheater plug) on one of those components and see if that stops the hum. You might also want to mess with placement...just in ca...
Need Suggestions on CD Player under 1k
Hi Driver, I'm not too familair with many CDPs in that price range, so I can't speak from experience. I've heard great things about so many, and I'm pretty sure that a used Meridian, Audio Note, Cary, Resolution Audio, Muse, Theta, Arcam, etc. tha...
