CD volume levels
Hey Alcides...thanks for all of the technical info and insight. I find this stuff fascinating. I was referring to rock/pop CDs in my rambling above, but I must admit...there have been a few jazz remasters that have made me wonder.
CD volume levels
I think a lot of the digital remastering is hit or miss. It definitely has a lot to do with marketing, but some of it is sincere and done well. Unfortunately, labels can have something cleaned up, boost the treble, and compressed and many people w...
DAD sound only DVD-V kontra DVD-A ?
Hi Sorlowski...I can't answer your question about the sound of DVD-A compared to the sound of DAD, but I do think regular DAD (DVD-V??) discs sound very good. I also think pushing that format may have been a smart way to go (considering most peopl...
CD volume levels
Hey Fatparrot...a really hot CD is probably compressed (or at the very least, limited) quite a bit to be as hot as it is.When analog signals were run hot to magnetic tape, the tape would still accept the signal (up to a point), but it would compre...

Test Record Options
Hi 4yanx...www.amusicdirect.com had a bunch a few months ago. I got mine from them, but I did have some quality issues. The first was warped and had a huge spindle hole (bigger than any spindle), so I exchanged it for a second that was in good sha...
Does your system sound better in the winter?
The blue light on my amp doesn't light up (or it lights very dimly) on days like the ones you mention...not enough power, I suppose. The amp still works, but it's obviously receiving less power than it should. I'd comment on the sound quality, but...
Can someone recommend a few Joni Michell albums?
"Blue" and "Court And Spark" are probably her two most critically acclaimed and both are indicative of her general "style". They're both a great place to start. If you don't like those, you may not care for her more experimental stuff.
How to find vinyl?
All of the above ideas are great. Big cities usually have some good record stores (though not always) and most college towns are a safe bet for one or two decent record stores. It becomes a challenege at times. You may spend hours searching throug...
Shanling CD S-100 vs: Music Hall CD25
They are the same unit and Music Hall has the rights in the US. I suppose that's why a Canadian distributor decided to sell the Shanling player with a lower mark-up...they want to get some of the Music Hall business. Those Chinese are quite the ca...
Best CCR album?
I agree with the above, but all of their albums (or the first four anyway) are good. John Fogerty was a pretty strong songwriter at that time. You probably won't be too disappointed with any of them (if you like their sound, that is).
Looking reccom. for tube pre amp for about 1000?
A used Counterpoint SA-3000 hybid pre with phono ($500-$800)...maybe a used Audible Illusions w/phono for $1000-ish. If phono isn't required, you could go with a Counterpoint SA-2000 (identical to 3000, but no phono) for even less.
Glossary of terms for the audiofile venacular ?
There is a Chesky sampler/test CD that tells you what an audiphile term is and then plays an example that helps describe that term. For example, they describe "dynamics", tell you what it is, and play a very dynamic big band piece to illustrate it...
Cary 301 Tube CD Skips
Does it use that Philips CD12(?) transport that they used on the 303?? If it does, you should talk to the people at Cary. There are a few threads on audio asylum about some Philips transport problems on Cary players.
